The Democratic Party before 1968 stood for the same policies as the Republican Party after 1968 ---- states' rights and limited government. The solid blue South revolted against civil rights legislation and became solid red states. The OP takes a glib view of American history.

Indian genocide began way before there was a country here, let alone any political parties. Like with Chris Columbus, literally.

Same with slavery, which in a world sense existed for millennia, and in a North American sense also went back to Columbus, who brought Indians back to Europe as "specimens" before coming back to the Americas to enslave him some, send them out to find gold and then cut off their hands when they came back without it (in a land that didn't have gold anyway).

And the Klan had no political party roots or affiliations. When it finally did try to dabble in politics (in the 1920s) it made friends, enemies, candidates and opponents in both parties.

So it's interesting that an OP would invoke the idea of being "clued in", since the OP's grasp of history clearly isn't.

At first the North with the Republicans loved negroes. Then after the Civil War they realized their mistake and then hated them.

Ehh --- not quite. The Democratic Republicans of Jefferson were long gone by then. They absorbed the Whigs --- those who were anti-slavery, which was the question that party couldn't come to a unified stance on which is why they broke up -- as soon as the RP was formed in 1854. Lincoln himself had been one. And from that party came the idea of "doing big things with government", which included the whole massive Reconstruction operation and the first affirmative action.

The Democrats took on the Populist movement around the turn of the 19th/20th century when the Republicans at the same time took on the interests of the wealthy and corporations -- despite a brief relapse from the by-then outlier Teddy Roosevelt, a "Progressive".

Since the South has always hated negroes the Republicans moved down there. The Southerners were rebelling against LBJ's Civil Rights policies.

Even though staunchly conservative in spirit, "Republican", being the party of Lincoln, the man who had defeated and humiliated them, was in effect a dirty word in the South -- until Strom Thurmond broke the ice after exactly 99 years and jumped ship in 1964 after the CRA passed. He figured he'd have a better shot at opposing it from the Republican side.
