Protectionism was a staple point of American economics policy for a long time, and it ended up leading to the Great Depression.

I cannot think of one time in US history when protectionism directly led to an increase in jobs or growth. The arguments for its merits are all based on fallacies.

I concluded that Donald Trump is either a certified idiot on the subject of economics, or he is personally benefiting from tariffs in some way.

So I did some investigating, and found that some of his business competitors rely heavily on foreign trade, particularly Mexico and China. That signifies to me that he is intentionally fucking over America to serve his special interests.

It need not lead to Great Depression. The most important factor was an unregulated market and banking system. Also, the consumer bubble burst when purchasing went down and too many people were buying on credit.
