How high is violent but petty crime on police priority?

Most violent crimes are not murder, but petty, like mugging or homelessness. How high does the police and the judges usually place these on their priority list?

Mugging hurts shoppers and commuters. Homelessness invites violent attacks on the homeless or generates pick pocketing and more mugging.

How are these usually kept in check? Do towns usually fail to keep these numbers down, because they are corrupt or because they are overpopulated or because poverty prevents them from policing their ghettos and slums?

They may be vulnerable-looking. But that doesn't mean they "always get attacked". They're certainly not a target for robbery.

Homelessness is a socioeconomic tragedy, not a crime.

Mugging is not a petty crime. Mugging is being robbed on the public thoroughfare by armed threat or by assaultive force. It is a serious crime.

How are these usually kept in check? Do towns usually fail to keep these numbers down, because they are corrupt or because they are overpopulated or because poverty prevents them from policing their ghettos and slums?

If you will watch the increasingly popular tv documentaries, COPS and Live PD, you will see that police all over the U.S. are preoccupied with petty drug offenses which diverts their attention from real crime.

This situation will not change until the American People awaken to the fact that the War On Drugs is wholly counterproductive. It needs to be replaced with a sensible approach to the problem of drug abuse. If just ten percent of the money which is wasted on the drug war were diverted to an intensive public education program we would see an immediate and substantial reduction in the use of dangerous substances.

Public education is the way cigarette smoking was reduced by 75% -- without arresting anyone or deploying SWAT teams over a hundred times a day.
