A man who murdered his grandparents in the grip of a schizophrenic delusion was on unescorted day release from a mental health hospital when he terrorised a suburban neighbourhood.

Ross Konidaris was ordered inside Thomas Embling Hospital until 2039 by a court – but as his mental health progressed, he was allowed out of the facility every day including to work in a grocery store and a car wash.
On September 13, 2019, the 31-year-old left the hospital on his own, did cocaine about 6am, and then drove to the Melbourne suburb of Cairnlea, where he attempted to break into a series of homes armed with a meat cleaver and a pair of scissors, punching one resident of the quiet neighbourhood repeatedly in the head.
He was sentenced on Friday by the County Court of Victoria to six years’ prison with four years non-parole.

Letting him out on "unescorted day" was the first mistake.
