Our entire political system has been corrupted by big money donors and the two major political parties.

And money is the primary problem. We allow a few big money donors to exert control over the parties that decide who will run for president and ultimately who will be elected. This corruption permeates the entire federal government right down to the lowliest congress person.

Foreign money should not be allowed at all but we see foreign interests giving huge dollar amounts to the RNC and DNC we even allow foreign money donations for candidates of Congress and the presidency.

WHat can we do to get rid of at least foreign contributions and limit the big money donors from exerting control over our political system?

Its not just an American issue. Po;itical funding and lobbying is a cancer on politics. The main problem is that turkeys do not vote for christmas.

In Canada, we banned contributions and financed the elections by giving the parties $3 for every vote they got, per election. They weren't allowed to spend more. It worked really, really well at keeping money out of politics, but of course, once the Conservatives got into office, they eliminated that law and we're back to donations.

Between the primary season and the general, it is shocking how much money went into this year's election campaigns. All of I could think of throughout was what a fucking waste! Imagine if those billions has been spent on education or infrastructure, rather than this bullshit.

Possibly through congress and the FEC

1974 Amendments: Following the documentation of campaign abuses in the 1972 elections, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) was established and given jurisdiction in civil enforcement, authority to write regulations and responsibility for monitoring compliance with FECA.

Use modern communications technology to keep senators and representatives in their district. Keeping these folks out of Washington would keep their physically away from a lot of the lobbyists who would actually have to travel the country to see the reps.

Having the reps living and working at their professions in their districts would allow us to dispense with their salaries and benefits as reps would be earning their livelihood in their own professions, eye doctor, lawyer, used car sales, bartender, instead of being on the public dole.

That’s like asking how to get the water out of the oceans. Politics exist to take from the masses to enrich the few.

Alas ... we cannot compel the Free Press to publish stories counter their commercial interests ... and we are a capitalist country ... much of this money in contributions winds up in the hands of the media as paid advertisements ... good luck getting anyone but public broadcasting to decry this situation ... I understand public media is bias towards affluent liberals, the ones who donate, but it should be on everyone's list of media sources ... they do publish stories that commercial won't (or can't) publish themselves ...

People in Congress have the most to gain by leaving the system as is ... no way will they try to change it ... this exposes a flaw in our Constitution, when Congress benefits, nothing will change ... it takes 2/3's of each house to start the process of overturning SCOTUS' decision that donating money is Free Speech ... we need some manner of initiative petition process that allows We the People to initiate changes to our government ... like some States already have ...

A start would have been NOT reversing the ban on lobbyists!

get rid of citizen's united.

lol ... good luck.

That did NOT stop anyone from donating to politics. It only stopped certain groups from speaking out on their own. You really should understand the law and ruling before commenting on it.

Either that or you are simply intentionally misrepresenting the issue.

citizen's united allows dark money & super pacs to steer any politician willing to take it.

bernie has been trying from day one to get it overturned, & was always a main focus within his platform. is it the only answer? of course not ... but a damn good way to help correct the wrong.

The law did NOT stop people or corporations from donating to politicians or the parties. Learn what it was before commenting on it.

Politicians sadly want to cut those not a part of the parties from having a say outside of the party. The law stopped NO ONE from donating to politicians or the parties.

dude - citizen's united ALLOWS MORE weight to those who can afford it.

i never said it STOPPED the money. quite the opposite in fact AND nobody has to account for that cash being funneled in; thereby circumventing the whole 'limit' on how much cash can go to any pol willing to take it.

are we clear yet?

The question was how to get money out of politics. Not how do we keep those outside of politics from having a say.

All the money being "funneled in" must be accounted for.

& overturning citizen's united is

a

start.

you can't account for any cash if it's not declared because no individual is donating; but rather from sources not regulated & obligated to do so... per the decion by the SC to allow CI to be the norm.

we are on the same side here.

You are talking out of both sides of your mouth. You have no idea what you are even saying. Politicians and the parties are required to report every single penny they take in. There is no such thing as unregulated sources they do not have to report.

You are talking about a massive government with this. To eliminate that and then get people who tell us they have good intention and only replace the old with themselves as the powerful is not a fix either.
