How do dems outnumber repubs 51-49

This may sound silly, but how is it they get 51, when I thought that two states elected independents? I know 2 from each state, but when I was reading the news, lieberman won, and some other independent in VT I think. How are independents counted?

Or is the news assuming that the indep are always going to vote on the dems side? Lieb, prob on social,fiscal, but the other i don't know. If so, what is the point of being called an independent?

Yeah, but that's just one issue. He's pretty liberal on most other things, though. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad he got elected, because he 'gets it' on the most vital issue of our generation. I disagree with him on a lot of other stuff, but I'm ok with that.

I kinda suspected they were liberal. But still, the MSM is saying that took complete control of congress, as if they actually had 51 dems and not 48.

Lieberman said from the beginning that he would caucus with the Democrats, and Sanders is to the left of all the Democrats and will effectively vote Democratic when it counts (although apparently he did some crazy socialist stuff back in Vermont when he had the time) so his caucusing with the Democrats is just a tip of the hat to pragmatism.

My primary concern at this point is that there enough Dems who are not of the cut-n-run mentality. I don't really know WHERE Lieberman stands on every issue.

Except for his stance on the war, he typically votes with Dingy Harry and Pelosi. If you took out the bolded portions, the Dems wouldn't have dumped him. He lost the nomination in the primary because he has his own brain.

His numbers are wrong. It looks like Virginia is going to the Dems. That means they have 49 "official" democrats, 1 "unofficial" democrat in the form of Senator Lieberman, who still considers himself a democrat, and 1 de facto democrat.
