'Small world of murder': As homicides drop, Chicago police focus on social networks of gangs - U.S. News

Murders are down this year by almost half in his district and about 20 percent citywide, according to department data. It’s the equivalent of more than 80 lives “saved,” as the commander puts it, and the lowest Chicago murder toll in a half century.

The switch was thrown quietly in May 2012, hidden inside a 16-page directive, “Gang Violence Reduction Strategy,” and largely ignored amid a 60 percent rise in murders in the first quarter alone. With less than a year on the job, McCarthy had already disbanded two special task forces, roving teams that muscled neighborhoods into submission. Now he was betting on what he calls “the next phase of community policing in this world”: an emphasis not on the traditional “hot spots” for crime, but on the “hot people” who commit most criminal acts. Chicago Police Department committed to using the new science of social network analysis — the same tools that allow Silicon Valley to predict who you know and what you might like to buy — to detail the city’s “small world of murder,” as one researcher put it, and use that knowledge to stop the next bullet before it's fired.

Nice one RW, but everyone knows that it's because Obama and his "goons" are in Hawaii playing golf.

Seriously, get your head out of the 18th hole.

With just three weeks until we close out the year, the homicide ticker is stuck on 401. That’s still almost a hundred more than New York, a city with over three times Chicago’s population, has had to date but it’s also the largest year-over-year drop in a decade, police department data show.

They could go a step further and just keep these thugs in jail. Rates would plummet, all without the need for gun control.

The US leads the world in incarceration and we still have murder rates three times that of similar countries.

We must be doing something wrong

What is a similar country to America?
Canada? - not even close.
Europe? - politically and demographically very different.
What other countries have such high crime areas due to past social engineering?

So it's not the guns after all.

Imagine that...it is due to gang activity in isolated high crime neighborhoods. Gee...what a surprise! And how did these neighborhoods get built? What color, primarily, are these neighborhoods comprised of? Blacks and Latinos you say...well...why are they so bunched up together?...one might say segregated even. No way that one of the more liberal cities in America is SEGREGATED????
And why is that? You think it has something to do with social programs??? :eusa_shifty:
Well....

Look....we have a murder rate three to six times that of nations we consider "civilized"

It is something we should be ashamed of, not something we should rationalize

Now THIS is a liberal statement if I ever heard one. Damn.
Holy crap...not rationalize a problem of this magnitude??
This is a great example of the flawed logic of the liberal mind. Ignore facts, ignore cause and effect - and just feeel bad about it and let's taaaaalllk about whyyyyyy this is so terrible...and for Gods sake...we do not even DARE talk about the racial aspect..noooo.

Well....

End Segregation!

Just as 'white' children were once bussed to 'black' schools (is this still happening?) it is time to relocate 'white people' into 'black' districts. It could be done quite easily, with the liberal use of cattle prods, tazers, mace and, in the last resort, machine guns.

I'm sure that our lefty liberal colleagues would love it in Watts or wherever and would only need tazering five or six times before they agreed on the move.

yea we are.....we put violent criminals away and then let them out in 3-5 years for "good behavior" and then put non-violent drug users away and keep them there....

How dare they Racially profile MINORITY areas and black people who are subject to on-going and constant pogram of racism by the white men who keep them PURPOSEFULLY down! Hey Hoe, your RACIST program has to Go!!!

The means DO NOT justify the ends. The so-called "high crime areas" aka the hight N!##ER populated areas! How come all these areas (that 100% to those of you that can't count) are located in areas where blacks make up 95% or more of the population? Is that a coincidence? I THINK NOT!!! Why not going in Naperville, Kildeer, Long Grove or Northbrook? Not enough N!##ERS there to harass, only a bunch of rich white folks? I bet you could find some white collar criminals or some hard drug users and sellers!!! Heck if you "muscled in submission" these white areas (you god damn racist cops), then you would stop the next George Zimmerman (aka white men, even though Zimmerman is Hispanic, that are hunting black men in astonishing numbers it could be considered genocide)!

READ btw the lines and SEE WHAT THEY ARE REALLY SAYING:
"Roving" and "muscled into submission" = Looking to Harass Young INNOCENT Black Men for no reason and compete police brutality on black children and women! FUCK RACIST!
"Hot Spots" = Where N!##ERS make up 95%+ of population
"Hot People Who Commit Crime" = Racially profile all N!##ERS
"Science of social network analysis" = Racially profile all N!##ERS

Jeezus RW you need to check your racism at the door!

So basically they dropped the crime rate by racial/class profiling.
Hmm...I thought liberals hated this?

They only hate it when conservatives state it. They love it when liberals associated with Obama do it! Get your facts right. It's the same thing with the Patriot Act and War. They screamed against the Patriot Act when Bush passed it, but loved it to death when Obama jumped it into hyper-speed! They were against Iraq (and many against Afghanistan - protesting daily - where is the stupid ignorant bitch now whose son died, where are the Code Pink ***** showing up with blood on their hands?), but not Libya, Yemen, Pakistan (we are still bombing them) and various African countries. Nope, Obama did it, so it has to be AOK!

In reality getting Chicago under 500 is a great feat and I am proud of that. Actually I see it dropping more in 2014. The reasons are simple: (1) We are looking at one of the coldest winters in years (when it's cold in Chicago, the violence literally remains on ice), (2) Rahm is going to ramp up this racial profiling campaighn which is working and HE SHOULD CONTINUE IT, fuck the PC nonsense, (3) Chicago has lost even more population again in 2013 and it won't stop in 2014. Less people less victims; and (4) Lastly, pop is going to be legalized, yep it's only medical marijuana, but if you want a prescription you will get a prescription (legalize pot and you will see another tick down)

Rahm will touted first time in a long time it has been under 400 in a year. Could it get lower than 350 or 300? Who knows.

A few months ago, I listened to a speech of the Cook County State's Attorney, and she sounded good on the subject. I don't recall her mentioning gun control, especially since it was an American Legion banquet I suppose.

I daresay there are as many shootings in Chicago as ever, but perhaps the aim is worse.
