Heavily armed military personnel have been deployed throughout Mexico to fight crime, but state and local police forces, many of which are riven by corruption, are outgunned by criminals and face other challenges, such as low pay.

Criminal groups "are using military tactics and equipment like tanks, landmines, rocket-launchers. It is getting to a point where we are not equipped enough to fight back, and most of the time we rather leave than stay to fight," the officer said, speaking anonymously to avoid retaliation.

English journalist Ioan Grillo, who has covered crime in Mexico for more than 20 years, says most of the automatic weapons sold legally in the US end up in the wrong hands in Mexico, driving armed conflict there.

There is no "makes it almost impossible to fight back". I am just about done with the alleged helplessness of Mexico.

The real problem are many many thousands of American idiots who are very stupid to be ingesting highly addictive Narcotic drugs in the first place, which is why we have a large inflow of drugs and outflow of $$$ to help the drug dealers buy those powerful weapons in the first place.

The stupidity persists for generations too, since they never learn to see how bad addictive and damaging the drugs are to the body of the previous generation.

That's a made up retarded lie by an idiotic foreign journalist. ... :cuckoo:
They have no idea how difficult it is to legally get an automatic weapon in the US.

How about more like 60%. It's a cottage industry in Texas to provide those weapons for the Mexican Cartels and Criminals.

Yup. So take the market away from the cartels.

It's more like almost 0%
Automatic weapon ownership in the U.S. is difficult because most people can't meet the legal qualifications to posses or buy one.
Plus they are highly regulated and monitored after being purchased. ...

Equipment doesn't have to be going across the United States border into Mexico to arm the cartels.

What type of automatic weapons and heavier equipment are the cartels utilizing?

Knowing that might tell you where the equipment is really coming from.

The Cartels are mostly armed with semi autos like many 3rd world countries militaries are. FN and Colt won't export to a country on the bad boy list. So they use the old Straw Man Purchase of ARs in Texas. This ain't the Middle East where you can hammer an AK out of every blacksmith's shop in a matter of hours.

Grillo is lying, as per usual. The automatic weapons come up from Central, and South America. This has been proven multiple times. Put more simply, a SEMI automatic weapon in the USA costs many hundreds of dollars. Fully automatic weapons cost 100 bucks or less in Central America. What do you think the bad guys are going to spend their money on?

You need a special FBI permit and 10K minimum to buy from a private seller. There is only X amount that were grandfathered in from that 1986 law. They might be able to convert USA made ARs, but full auto rifles are likely brought in from China.

Brazilian made?

Cuz Mexico never had guns until there was an America to steal them in? Rubbish. Mexico's own failed culture is a self-inflicted problem. They been dumping their poverty problem on us for a couple hundred years now; time to send it back to them.

Doubtful.

If they are buying tanks, rpgs and landmines...they are getting fully automatic weapons from the same source.

No, they aren't. Whenever you see video of their shootouts they are ALL armed with full auto weapons. Up to .50 Browning machineguns.

You are factually wrong on all points.

you are wrong, a fully automatic weapon sold in the US REQUIRES a Federal license and the owner must keep the ATF informed of its whereabouts at all times.

Making new machine guns for civilians was all but banned in 1986 as part of a compromise in the Firearms Owners' Protection Act. That's when prices for machine guns began to skyrocket.

Depending on how you look at it, the regulation of machine guns could either be a gold standard for gun control or proof that responsible gun owners should be left alone. Machine guns covered by the 1934 National Firearms Act have never been used in a mass shooting in America.

Howard Wolfe, who spent 30 years with the ATF, said part of the reason for that is the heavy scrutiny machine gun owners receive from the government. These guns are the most heavily regulated, legally owned weapons in the country.

Still, Wolfe thinks it would be impractical to do the same thing for far more numerous semi-automatic rifles, like AR-15s.

Automatic weapons are relatively rare and very expensive in the U.S. They aren't getting them from the U.S. Few people even want one one here, despite all the noise made over them.

A word about semi-automatic firearms

Since 1989, "gun control" supporters have tried to trick the public into believing that semi-automatic firearms are fully-automatic, and that their sales were unregulated.8 In his State of the Union address on Jan. 24, 1995, President Clinton copied the style of exaggeration used by President Roosevelt 60 years earlier against fully-automatic firearms, claiming the "assault weapon" law was needed to protect people from a "hail of assault-weapon attack."9 Campaigning in New Hampshire in February 1996, Clinton said the law was necessary so "people can't be sprayed innocently while they're walking up and down the block."10 Network television news groups have shown video footage of machine guns being fired while reporting on semi-automatic firearms issues. Anti-gun activists have said, preposterously, that it is easier to buy an "assault weapon" than a gallon of milk. For the facts about semi-automatic firearms, including statistics from state and local law enforcement agencies showing that so-called "assault weapons" are used in a very small percentage of violent crimes, see the NRA's "Semi-Automatic Firearms" fact sheet, available by phone request (1-800-392-8683) or on the "World Wide Web" ().

And, from the stats, Gun Show vendors, who heavily discriminate against buyers at will, are doing a much better job of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals than Congress is.
