Let's be fair to President Obama.

The idea that what people did in the privacy of their bedrooms should be legal was accepted by many people, even those who characterize gay love as "sinful" or "immoral" or "yucky."

But the idea of gay marriage was really a little too much for many people to stomach. Civil unions were about as far as some could go.

So it's no big deal that President Obama was hesitant to jump into the controversy.

After all, he had to prove that he was not a wild-eyed liberal.
