Home Electricity Use in US Falling to 2001 Levels - ABC News

In the early 2000s, as energy prices rose, more states adopted or toughened building codes to force builders to better seal homes so heat or air-conditioned air doesn't seep out so fast. That means newer homes waste less energy.

Big appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners have gotten more efficient thanks to federal energy standards that get stricter ever few years as technology evolves.

Those incandescent light bulbs are being replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs and LEDs that use 70 to 80 percent less power. According to the Energy Department, widespread use of LED bulbs could save output equivalent to that of 44 large power plants by 2027.

The Energy Department predicts average residential electricity use per customer will fall again in 2014, by 1 percent.

This is what happens when you don't listen to Republicans. How dare they take away our light bulbs. How dare they give us more government standards and regulations.

You have to force feed them. There is no other way. They talk about "fiscal responsibility" and then fight taking even a tiny bit of responsibility on anything. I guess they are too worried about being "free". Too bad nothing is "free".

Yay government! There is absolutely no way the private sector used energy savings as a sales technique to sell their products/services, especially considering the sooper dooper low energy prices under this current chimp's administration.......

The dirty little secret is that new home construction is way down and doesn't account for lower electricity use. Little by little the Hussein administration is forcing Americans to live like socialist Russians who endure cold temperatures because they can't afford government mandates.

Use may be down but cost is up and will continue to rise as more and more local providers lose revenue due to lower usage...

This happened in New Mexico before I left, PNM requested a 21% increase before they settled for 10.8%.

Power companies lose revenue, the will simply charge customers more...

They don't care how much electricity their products use. That only became a selling point when government forced the issue.

Bullshit and here's a free lesson as to why you're dead wrong:

Rweenies 10,000 BTU air conditioner, the Comrade 2013 sells for $300.

My 10,000 BTU air conditioner, the Freedom 2013 sells for $350.

Sure, my a/c costs $50 more, but it will save my customers $150 in energy costs in the first year alone over the Comrade 2013. See how I get your market share and help cut down energy usage through the power of the free market with no government interference?

Of course you don't...

Here's why electricity use is lower: electricity costs have increased.

It won't be long before the government is encouraging people to have their own personal electricity black outs for a few hours each day in order to reduce their electricity bills (which is what is happening in Germany now).

Topic totally irrelevant, it's all the Republicans fault

Since the CFLs seem to be the current favorite substitute for the incandescent...

How many CFLs are manufactured here in the U.S.?

Answer? Zero.

That's right folks, our government effectively put an entire industry out of business. Okay, that may be a bit of hyperbole but they certainly slowed an industry way down...

Yes, advances in technology are the direct result of government!

Some are. Like NASA. Everyone knows that. Since it was a Republican President who started NASA back when Republicans liked "education" and "science".

There wouldn't be any energy savings without government regulation. How safe do you think your car would be without government regulation? Only a tard would put their family into a car built without regulations and drive them on a road without a speed limit to a diner that doesn't follow health standards.

Of course there would be energy savings without government regulation, regulated through the mechanism of price would be one acceptable answer. But even cavemen knew that building a fire inside shelter was more effective than building it out in the open. Cars were fine before government regulations required seat belts to save folks from their own bad acts, and the bad acts of others. And of course folks drive their old jalopies without government required things to diners (referred to as outdoor barbecues) that don't follow health code.

Crap, were you seriously raised in a world so afraid of its own shadow that you believe this nonsense? It makes about as much sense as arresting someone having their head beaten in for killing their attacker with a single well placed shot, self protection being another one of those things that have been going on since before you were born., and not requiring the government to babysit those doing it.
