(WP) -An extremely powerful winter storm is pulling away from Hawaii after unleashing damaging winds, massive waves, coastal flooding and snow in unusual places. The storm, which the National Weather Service office in Honolulu described as “historic,” began pounding the islands Friday. Hawaii News Now reported a 66-year-old California man died in the rough surf off northwest Maui on Friday.

It's that confounded global warming, I tell ya.

Snow in Hawaii?? Must have been one hell of a strange storm.
Actually, it snows there a lot more often than one would expect.
It snowed on Big Island during the volcanic eruption.

And-
Although Hawaii is located in the tropics, it contains high mountains which receive snowfall every winter.

On the Big Island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea (13,796' / 4205m) and Mauna Loa (13,660' / 4163m) get at least some snow every year, usually between October and March, although snow can fall any time from August to May.

On the island of Maui, Haleakala (10,023' / 3055m) occasionally gets a little bit of snow.

Of these three, both Mauna Kea and Haleakala have a road to the top. When there's a big snowfall, residents of the Big Island drive to the top in pickup trucks, where they ski, snowboard, and build snowmen, then fill the beds of the pickup trucks with snow and drive back down to sea level to continue their snow play in the heat.

Is this storm more powerful than the 1980 Kona Low?

Hard to say at this point as we're still busy forecasting the weather impacts. However, after the storm passes we'll have time for a more thorough historical review.

And 191 was a single wind gust that was recorded, here are the winds they have actually been experiencing-

Snow on the Big Island isn't abnormal. They have a ski season of about 2 weeks a year. I've skied on the Big Island.

Snow on Maui is very unusual. I've never seen snow on that island. The article I found on it said the snow would be in the Mountains but didn't say which mountains. There's Haleakala on the eastern shore of the island but there's also the west Maui mountains on the north shore. So the snow could be in those places.
