Growing up in America can often lead many of us to believe that whites were the only thing to have done anything remarkable. American history is typically white American history, but times are changing. With the age of the Internet, we are better able to find those lost legends of glory, intelligence and perseverance that often get lost in the history ...Read More »

Smart people already know that many people were making cars before Ford.

OP just now learning about it.

OP is a racist idiot.

Many private inventors in both Europe and America had built both steam and gasoline powered cars many years before Henry Ford.

But they were usually one-off hand made models that were sold to wealthy clients as a novelty .

Mr. Ford's contribution was to invent modern automobile assembly line production techniques.

And standardize auto parts specifications so that all of the parts were interchangeable.

Both innovations together resulted in low priced cars that the average working man could afford to purchase. .....

Thanks for sharing! Although other carmakers preceded Ford, this Black automaker was not even mentioned. Your revelation is indeed unique, inspiring and uplifting. That is welcome change from the sordid gray world of black despair that many whites deposit here over and over.

Carter G. Woodson" said:
If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated. The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of tradition; and where is he today? The Hebrew keenly appreciated the value of tradition, as is attested by the Bible itself. In spite of worldwide persecution, therefore, he is a great factor in our civilization."[5]

Henry Ford was making model T's in 1908.

The Patterson's started theirs in 1915.

Neither one invented the automobile.

Yes, our first "invader" being Jesus. :)

OP prolly doesn't even know that many Inventors were flying Gliders long before the Wright Brothers came along.

Because... Racism!

The OP doesn't make a claim that Patterson invented the automobile and apparently their automobile did NOT precede the T model Ford. Now, if the Op would have said Patterson was making horse drawn carriages before ford was making cars, I doubt if there would be an argument to the contrary.

Still, having resurrected the memory of the Greenfield -Patterson experience and enterprise, the OP has done us all a service. Crucial bits and pieces of positive Black history are emerging to illuminate the potential of Blacks everywhere. The reality of Greenfield -Patterson should have been included in US History, period. But, considering the overt racism that caused it to be almost lost, this jewel sparkles even brighter in the light of knowledge.

I totally agree with you.

What can the White guys, like Tucker, say when they were forced out of the Auto Industry?

Can they cry racism too? No that would be stupid.

That isn't the issue, Tucker is immortalized in US History while memories of Patterson were allowed to dissolve into oblivion with hardly a mention. So pervasive was the snub that it is only now being uncovered as having some modicum of relevance to Americana. That is racism when taken in context of the collective black experience in the USA!

Tucker was never "immortalized". In fact, most people had never even heard of him until the movie was made.

"He was never immortalized" How stupid can you be?

Oh, I had heard of Tucker well before the movie was made.We were told about the auto with 3 headlights in grade school. , In that context ,Tucker has been immortalized in a literary sense. But whether you agree or not, the movie immortalized him further in the minds and hearts of Americans. Don't try to understand my use of the word immortalized.;your mind isn't sophisticated enough to comprehend the use of literary tools to heighten the impact
of prose.

Why hasn't there been a movie made about Patterson? Why hasn't he been spoken about in circles where car talk rules the day? The story of an ex slave rising to such prominence in the car industry would be of note and of interest to all Americans yet.....he goes unrecognized.
