Well..sadly..the answer to your question..is that up until about a hundred years ago..women and children had no rights..they were chattel...and if a man wished for sex with a 9 year old..there were no laws against it. Childhood, as we know it..did not even exist 150 years ago. The only thing that stopped a rapist or child molester were a girl's father or Brothers. London and New York city had child brothels with menus..adverting what services were available and how much. They were not against the law until the early 20th century.

Children's Rights and Women's Rights have marched hand in hand..and they still do.

As far as the Church was concerned--and I do mean both ...Catholic and Protestant..it was literally a non-issue.

I believe that if it were not for the exposure in the media..and in the civil courts...it would still be a non-issue.
