Happy Confederacy Surrender Day!

1865April 09
Robert E. Lee surrenders

In Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 Confederate troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, blocked from joining the surviving Confederate force in North Carolina, and harassed constantly by Union cavalry, Lee had no other option.

In retreating from the Union army’s Appomattox Campaign, the Army of Northern Virginia had stumbled through the Virginia countryside stripped of food and supplies. At one point, Union cavalry forces under General Philip Sheridan had actually outrun Lee’s army, blocking their retreat and taking 6,000 prisoners at Sayler’s Creek. Desertions were mounting daily, and by April 8 the Confederates were surrounded with no possibility of escape. On April 9, Lee sent a message to Grant announcing his willingness to surrender. The two generals met in the parlor of the Wilmer McLean home at one o’clock in the afternoon.

The Confederacy was one of the most inhuman and despicable governments ever formed.
40 percent of its population was in bondage while the rest of the population prospered off their labor.
Let me ask you a question:

Do you ever complain about the injustice of abortion?

If not, you have no right to complain about an injustice that happened more than 100 years ago.

<sob> But....but...
What about ABORTION?
If you think abortion is OK today you would have owned slaves when it was legal.

Not FAIR!
How can we complain about ANYTHING when there is ABORTION?
So long as Democrats are allowing legal abortion I will not listen to them complain about anything else.

It wasn't even that good. A white man without land in the confederacy was little better than a slave himself. The actual beneficiaries of slavery numbered maybe a 100,000.

The whole Southern economy was built on Slavery
It trickled down, except to those who were slaves

the next time, Maryland will stay on the RIGHT side.
I have my doubts that maryland will even fight under the US flag much less the confederacy
Good point there! I don't think any state will fight under the US flag if Biden wants to declare a foreign war to "unify" us: we're way too divided.

But I suppose you mean that Maryland might opt out entirely if there is a split, like Texas tried on. I think here we are too enmeshed in the Mid-Atlantic small states, but I would agree if there is a split, there will quickly be several new countries, not two.

Maybe a little bit but the life of a white southern tenant farmer was so crappy that a false promise of land and slaves of their own was enough to get them out there fighting a war. They didn't fight for glory or anything other than a piece of the action and they got doodly-squat. Might be why all this lost-cause, war of northern agresssion stuff didn't get going until after the last confederate veterans had died. They knew better.

Yeah, appeasement works so well to calm things down, right?

It worked great for Chamberlain, and look how it's working now.

Maryland would fight on the democrat side vs the Americans.

How ironic is it that when the NEW confederacy forms, it will include many states from the original, and this time that confederacy's goal will be saving our Constitution rather than destroying it?
