Great TV Series Which Went One Season Too Far

Wayward Pines.

The first season was brilliant. Ten episodes in total.

I spent the first four episodes believing it was meant to be patterned after the classic 1960s show The Prisoner, with the protagonist confined to an isolated community, unable to escape, unable to contact the outside world, not knowing or trusting the motives or allegiances of his captors.

The fifth episode revealed a twist, that threw the whole story as I thought I knew it up to that point, on its ear.

The rest of the season, covers the downfall and destruction of the community, resulting from many not believing the truth that the protagonist tries to reveal, and other believing, but reacting very badly to it.

Where the story left off, there really wasn't any need to go any further with it, though there was room to do so.

The second season, however, seemed mostly pointless. It added a little bit of worthwhile information to the backstory for the first season, but really didn't do anything useful with the attempt to continue the story.
