State funding for volunteer fire departments is taking a big hit. It is going from $30 million to $7 million. Those departments are already facing financial strains.

The State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas represents 21,000 state firefighters. The Association says more than 80 percent of volunteer firefighters are reporting taking a personal hit in the budget crisis. They have started using their own money to help pay for equipment and supplies.

Gee, I wonder if anyone will ask him about this during the next debate?

Does "prayer" work? Has it worked for Texas? Non believers want to know.

If they are "volunteers", doesn't that mean they don't need to be paid?

Sounds to me like they cut a department that wasn't working terribly well.

Where did the OP mention ANYTHING about pay? It says that their budgets were cut and now have to pay for their own equipment and supplies. Volunteer FDs need training too. Hard to do that without any money.

Sorry Joe, you can't spin this as a positive for your guy.

I think it's just that god hates republicans. Remember Bobby Jindahl talking about how we don't need to fund volcano monitoring...and then a volcano erupted like days later?

I saw this. It's basically the Conservative meme. Cut cut cut..and when something doesn't work blame the people that are still trying to do the job.

Happened here during the snowstorm. Santitation department was at it's lowest manpower and when the snowstorm hit..snow removal was slow..understandably.

But right wing papers like the New York Post put out a story that the Santitation Department was doing it on purpose.

What the fuck does this have to do with Governor Perry, dipshit ?

It's part of a 'proposed' cut to the forestry service. A cut of about $34 million. It's in both the House and Senate versions of the next Texas state budget, but has NOT been passed or signed into law yet.

Texas Forest Service, Volunteer Fire Departments Preparing for Grant Cuts
Local volunteer fire departments and the Texas Forest Service are reacting to possible cuts as the Forest Service could lose $34 million in funding over the next two years, as legislators continue to look at ways to balance the budget.

Proposed. Hasn't happened yet.

More idiotic cuts in useful spending that will continue to bring down the quality of life in Texas.

Hey if that's what the people of Texas want, then who are we non-Texans to bitch?

So he cuts funding for firefighting, opposes efforts to stem global warming and then relies on prayer to stop wildfires

The failed Governor from Texas never stops giving to his state does he?

TX GOP Slashes Funding For Agency Battling Wildfires, While Also Blasting Obama For Not Spending More

For months, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has berated President Obama and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for not giving the state more federal money to combat historic wildfires that have so far burned 2.5 million acres. Despite the fact that the administration has offered 26 different kinds of federal assistance to combat the fires, Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) claimed that Obama is waging “a war on Texas.” After months of blaming the President for not doing enough, Reuters reported yesterday that Perry is poised to sign a budget that slashes funding for the state agency that is battling the wildfires.

Republicans control all three branches of government in Texas and are close to an agreement on a budget that makes deep cuts to the Texas Forest Service during an unprecedented and destructive wildfire season:
The Texas Forest Service faces almost $34 million in budget cuts over the next two years, roughly a third of the agency’s total budget. The cuts are in both the House and Senate versions of the proposed state budget. [...]

Assistance grants [for volunteer fire departments] are likely to take the biggest hit. Volunteers — two of whom were killed in fighting this year’s fires — make up nearly 80 percent of the state’s fire-fighting force and are first responders to roughly 90 percent of wildfires in Texas.

The budget cut hasn't happened yet according to Politico. Can someone get the truth on this? This article says they are set to slash funding. And it would be over the next two years according to this piece so it means the funding is currently there.

Texas lawmakers are set to slash funding for the agency responsible for fighting wildfires in the midst of a historic wildfire season in which some 2.5 million acres have burned.

"Volunteer programs are our No. 1 defense," Forest Service Director Tom Boggus told Reuters.

I find it interesting that libtards are up in arms about 'possible' budget cuts, when they have not yet happened.

When conservative get up in arms about the future funding issues for Social Security, libtards tell us 'It's fine... no need to do anything about it now'.

Texas lawmakers are passing legislation. How does this relate to Governor Perry? Did he request that this legislation be enacted?

And from what I have read so far, the budget for the current year is still intact. Can you prove otherwise?

California has slashed their firefighting budgets. Any comment on Democrats who aren't born agains doing the very same thing that the Texas lawmakers are doing?
