Gourmet potatoes favoured by top chefs and typically found only on the menus of high-end restaurants are to go on sale in Tesco this week to avoid them going to waste.

The move aims to ease a glut of fresh potatoes in the UK, with thousands of tonnes unused since the government ordered the closure of hospitality businesses on 23 March.

The specialist potato grower Carroll’s Heritage Potatoes, based near Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, supplies top restaurants across the UK with its distinctive, colourful spuds and works closely with celebrity chefs such as Tom Kerridge and Jamie Oliver.

I will be down there for a bag of Yukon Gold . Potatoes with built in butter. Lovely.

Didn't know yukon gold was a gourmet potato. We can buy them fairly regularly if we so desire. As a purchaser, I prefer good old Russette potatoes. As a grower I prefer Kennebecs or Red Pontiacs

I have never seen them in our stores to grow or buy. What a time to be alive !

One time I got a roasted fingerling potato on my gourmet plate that looked just like a turd. My husband couldn’t stop laughing, mostly because it wasn’t his plate. Give me a good old fashioned baked potato any day over food that looks like the chef crapped on my plate.

I'm a little funky with eating anything that looks purple or black. To me, that's a sign of something nature intended me NOT to eat. That said, I'm just not that sure that these funky strange potatoes really taste all that different from regular ones, so I will leave someone else to pay top dollar at some grossly over-priced restaurant--- --- I'll just stick with regular spuds.

I agree they don’t taste any better than a regular potato. The only time I thought one potato tasted better than the regular store bought was when I grew the potatoes myself. They went from garden to pot and damn they were spectacular!

Here in America we have lots of taters. I've grown the purple ones before. I don't especially like them. I saw bags of over-priced gourmet "new potatoes" in LIdl last week.

Naturally. The store bought stuff is crap. Best carrots I ever ate myself were my own. Hard to believe it was even the same vegetable! Damn near sweet as candy!

I bought some purple new potatoes at the county fair once. Purple inside too, but once you boil them, the color is all gone. Unless you eat them raw, you won't see the color on the plate. I was thinking of making purple mashed potatoes. No deal.

There really isn't a lot of difference but the purples just do not seem to get as large and the ones I grew at least tasted a little too much like dirt for my preference.

I think the regular ol' potato is just fine for me.

I'll have to check out my Nugget store for the restaurant grade Yukon Gold.

I was just thinking about potatoes yesterday as in who invented the French Fry? Could that be the greatest side dish ever for potato lovers?

Having fries this morning with a thin beef steak.
