Believe it or not I actually witnessed a man on a stretcher being brought in because he insisted on voting in person. In a democracy, we make it as easy as possible for people to vote. Not everyone can get to the polls. There are students who are away at school, and they're entitled to vote in their home state, as well as military people who are station overseas. There are people whose jobs take them overseas for a time. People who are in hospital and can't get to the polls - all kinds of reasons why mail in ballots are needed.
Americans voted by mail during the Civil War, so it's not like this is a new thing. Republicans have always promoted voting by mail.
