The teenager, a motorcycle pillion passenger, suffered a serious head injury in the attack on Hewitt Avenue, Sunderland, on 5 October.
He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but is now conscious and his condition is described as stable.
Two people have been charged and are going through the court system.
Steven Thompson, 39, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a firearm without a certificate and perverting the course of justice.
