Using home solar batteries for peak power and rewarding the homeowner for their use is a win-win for the homeowner and the utility. Forward thinking like this, as well as using EV batteries in the same fashion can help us meet future needs.

Utilities embrace virtual power plant model

A growing coalition of solar providers and utilities is paying homeowners to join virtual power plants (VPPs), which pool solar panels and batteries into a shared energy source. Sunrun, the largest U.S. distributed energy company, has over 106,000 participants who supplied 18 GWh to the grid in 2025, earning $17 million collectively. Reliant, with 300,000 VPP customers, is exploring electric vehicles as high-capacity grid assets, underscoring the model’s potential to reshape energy supply. TheStreet
