This is a modernism-allegorical encounter-tale inspired by the spectre-confrontation films Starship Troopers and The Forest.

Do you like 'new age stories' of creatures in computers, or do they seem too...artificial?

Alas was a mystic from Algeria living in America and studying Civil War history and came across a story of a Union soldier who started scribbling drawings of eerie creatures which he claimed he sighted on the battlefield while fighting. Alas realized these child-like 'stick-figure doodles' of eerie creatures represented something the Union soldier was fearing regarding the metaphysical horror of the Civil War itself. However, something troubled Alas regarding the figurines of the drawn creatures --- they resembled serpents and insects (rather large). Alas wondered why a Union soldier would hallucinate about snakes and bugs rather than dragons and werewolves.

Alas decided to ask his friends in the Civil War History department at Harvard University (where he was studying) about the Union soldier's eerie stick-figure drawings, and they all agreed it was rather strange that a Civil War soldier would hallucinate about large snakes and bugs rather than dragons and wolves. One student, a young woman named Mara, suggested that the giant snakes and bugs could symbolize some real 'phantoms' or 'inner-demons' the Civil War soldiers carried in their hearts and minds regarding the 'presence' of something unsightly...or even ugly. Alas and his Harvard friends decided to go camping in the forests of the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where sightings of the eerie cryptid the Jersey Devil were reported, so they could feel 'immersed' in folkloric hauntings.

One of the students, Tom, had ties to a military goods-and-equipment store and outfitted all the members of the Pine Barrens camping-team (which Alas named the 'Barrens Barons') with military gear and impressive guns which were also collected from Tom's friend, an avid gun-collector. The Barrens Barons decided to completely immerse themselves in the visceral experience of feeling 'haunted' by esoteric/strange presences/creatures (such as the Jersey Devil). While they were camping and trekking in the forest, they saw what resembled those Union soldier doodles --- spectres of giant serpentine bugs (with claws)! Alas concluded that fantasies about 'aliens' manifested real 'alienation' and the Barrens Barons fled after shooing away the phantom-spectres of the giant serpentine bugs and sending them....back to hell, but what Alas remembered most was that meditations on 'invasions' just might induce psychosomatic 'sightings' of real predators. Alas said to himself, "Symbolically for this new age of virtual reality, the mind truly is...its own place!"
