German cows cause methane blast in Rasdorf

Methane gas released by dairy cows has caused an explosion in a cow shed in Germany, police said.

The roof was damaged and one of the cows was injured in the blast in the central German town of Rasdorf.

Thanks to the belches and flatulence of the 90 dairy cows in the shed, high levels of the gas had built up.

Then "a static electric charge caused the gas to explode with flashes of flames" the force said in a statement quoted by Reuters news agency.

Emergency services attended the farm and took gas readings to test for the risk of further blasts, said local media.

Cows are believed to emit up to 500 litres of methane - a potent greenhouse gas - each per day.

americans don't like to be told what's good and sensible, they need to come to these decisions on their own...so maybe after 4 or 5 successive generations of poor health we will finally link our troubles to some causes like bad diet. humans aren't at their healthiest when meat is essential to every meal. the meat and potatoes diet starves the body nutritionally but having never not eaten that diet, one would not know your body can function a lot better with a wide variety of foods esp vegs. and fruits.

but it's true, no matter how much economic cost on the health care system, the environment and risks to agriculture, we will keep churning out meat without scorn, leaving this sector untouchable.

for every calorie of energy we get from grains like corn or rice, it takes 10 times the calories to produce just 1 calorie of beef and other meats. eating less meat would help reduce costs across the board but would have ripples throughout the system.

Farmer's fault not providing sufficient ventilation to prevent this from happening. I'd assume it happens when ever insufficient ventilation, and confinement collaborate together.

your game is to mis-represent what i said. of course meat in general is not bad. the point i was making it having meat all day long every day is not healthy. if you had half a brain you could do 10 minutes of research and realize doctors recommend a variety of foods, not just meat and potatoes.

why do we produce foods other than meat? because our body can't get all its nutrition from meat. ah but because you don't have a brain you blurt out what you think you disagree with. what a charmer.

I've read about cows damaging the environment before. It's apparantly due to their large number and producing so much 'gas' and the writer then suggested culling 'x' number of them to reduce the damage......mmmmm.........

only 1/3 of methane can be accounted by nature. that leaves 2/3rds, which comes from human activity (cows houses, pigs pins, fracking and so on). the problem with methane is its much more serious greenhouse gas that traps heat. luckily methane dissipates after about 10 years, so we would see fairly immediate results in the climate if we reduced methane by 1/3 let's say. but fracking is on the rise and so is demand for meat.
