NEW YORK – While volunteers passed out cups of Jell-O to the white-haired lunch crowd at a senior center, another group was distributing something that didn't quite fit amid the card games and daily gossip: condoms.

“You're giving out condoms,” 82-year-old Rose Crescenzo said with a wistful smile, “but who's going to give us a guy?”

“I think it should be done in areas where it's really needed,” said Julia Karcher, 82. “These ladies are all by themselves for years and years and years.”

But Marie Tarantino, who gave her age as “39-plus,” said lonely seniors might take unwise risks.

“They might pick somebody up on the street,” she said. “They just think that at a certain age they can't get pregnant. They don't think they could get a sexually transmitted disease.”

And Crescenzo, who lost her husband of 62 years last October, did take the condoms.

“If I get a date,” she said, “I'm going to use one of these.”

That's pretty awesome. I would have never thought of that, since seniors arn't really in that stage of life anymore. I figured they would just stop at a certain age.

I have read that with the advent of Viagra and other drugs that people can remain sexually active much later in life than often happened in the past. The article was about a Florida retirement community that had experienced an increase in STDs.

I have to laugh when I read this article. My aunt and uncle moved into an "active retirement community" a few years back. Beautiful, big townhouses, no yard work...pools and tennis courts and lots of social events. They are having a great time...the grand kids love coming over to swim in the pool, etc. But my aunt was stunned when she visited her doctor and he cautioned her about unprotected sex with multiple partners...apparently these communities frequently have members who engage in "sex parties" because their children are gone and they're ready to "be a little wild." I almost fell off my chair laughing at the thought of my aunt (a fairly prim and proper lady) gettin' it on with multiple members of the community bridge club!

I agree with other posters here...good for these senior citizens...I hope that I am healthy enough to be a bit risque when I get to that age!
