Seems like Thompson is going to run. What do you think? I need to hear his illegal immigration viewpoint. That is what finished McCain for me. I guess if Thompson plays it right, he can win the nomination. No one seems that thrilled with the current crop of contenders.

Actor Thompson quits show, eyes presidential run
By Richard Cowan

Hollywood actor Fred Thompson has tentatively decided to run for president, according to a long-time friend and political adviser, and has quit his role on the TV crime series "Law & Order."

"His (Thompson's) mind is made up to run if interest continues to be as intense as it is," Tom Ingram said in a telephone interview on Wednesday.

Thompson, who won election twice as a Republican senator from Tennessee, will now begin raising money to gauge support, added Ingram, who now serves as chief of staff to Sen. Lamar Alexander, also a Tennessee Republican.

He has officially quit his gig on Law and Order.

Fred Thompson dumped his wife and kids when they became inconvenient, dated a string of Hollywood hotties and married a hottie who is younger than his daughter and makes "Playboy" center-folds look flat chested. And this is the paragon of virtue and family values the religious right is embracing as the heir to the Reagan legacy. The GOP is in bigger trouble than anyone thought.

Lest we forget, Reagan, too, was divorced.

Republicans dont hold divorce against a candidate unless they are not republicans

Sure now how many of the Dems have been divorced?

None to my knowledge.

Look what they do to Hilary who managed to keep her relation intact after an affair.

They blame her and have nothing to say about people like Rudy who has had a couple of real blowout ugly marriages.

They say nothing

It's already been clearly explained that marriage stayed intact for political image and nothing more. Bill was going to divorce her in 88 before he decided to run for President. When he decided to run, the idea got squashed.

There's nothing commendable about staying married for political power.

Need a reference? Her own words in her new books.

No, it's YOU that's in bigger trouble than YOU thought.

Doesn't it strike you as odd that the right has no problem with the "hollywood elite" so long as they're right-wingers? Why isn't anyone telling him to shut up and act? *shrug*

In truth, Fred Thompson was a Nixon white house lawyer; worked for 20 years as a lobbyist. He's an inside the beltway, washington hack. The things people "like" about him are all based on the roles he's played and bear no relationship to who he is.

Pretty sad.

Better than letting your wife know that you were leaving her in a press conference or serving her with divorce papers while she was a post-mastectomy cancer patient still lying in her hospital bed.

Got you worried does he?

I can't speak for anyone but myself, and I can tell you that I have never watched a single episode of L&O and I can't remember seeing him in a movie since The Hunt For Red October. My opinion of the man was formed when he served in the senate and has everything to do with who he is, not the roles he's played. Given the current pool of candidates, both Republican and Democrat, it is my hope that he does indeed run.

Worried? No more than any other rightwing, corporatist who panders to the religious right, concerns me.

I'm sure you do hope he runs given that not a single person you have out there now has a chance. And the base is cranky because the front-runners are anathema to their agenda. Let's see how they go for a divorced guy who's married to a woman 4 years younger than his daughter. I can't wait to hear Thompson talk about "morality".

You have misjudged me. I hold no allegiance to either party, though I do tend to lean to the right I would happily vote for a candidate from any party I feel is qualified for whatever office he or she is running. I have in fact voted for Democrats, Indepedents, Libertarians, and Republicans.

As for Thompson being divorced, he is not Catholic, many Republicans are divorced, and divorce is neither immoral nor illegal. How does the age of his wife make him immoral? For centuries it was common for older men to marry much, much younger women? Does the almost ten year difference in age between my wife and I mean that we are immoral? (BTW, she's the older of the two, just saying. LOL) Truthfully, not being a religious man, I couldn't care less about the type of morality you are talking here. Agnosticism has it's benefits.

As long as the man is happy and not cheating on his wife, it's all good as far as I'm concerned.

This is a false comparison, and I think you know it. You're so bright, jillian; why do you insist on tainting your assertions with this kind of sneaky intellectual dishonesty?

"Shut up and act" scarcely applies to the courageous (or foolhardy) soul who puts his money where his mouth is, and dives into the meat-grinder that is modern-day public service.

Thompson is the only qualified person fromeither side to be POTUS currently running for the job.
If by "qualified" you mean experienced, then Richardson on the dem side is probably the most qualified. However, in my opinion, he would not be a good choice for President. There are several candidates with more executive experience than Fred Thompson, including Gilmore, Huckabee, Romney, and Tommy Thompson. Some of Fred Thompson's experience is not particularly attractive, such as years spent as a lobbyist, representing General Electric and Westinghouse. He was also a "registered foreign agent," representing overseas business interests. There is nothing wrong with those positions, but it does show that he has represented special interests. He certainly will not be able to represent himself as a Washington outsider. There are no candidates that do not come with liabilities. Perhaps Fred Thompson's best qualification will be his ability to communicate. We will see.

Seems like Thompson is going to run. What do you think? I need to hear his illegal immigration viewpoint. That is what finished McCain for me. I guess if Thompson plays it right, he can win the nomination. No one seems that thrilled with the current crop of contenders.

Anyone who uses a "one-issue" test to determine how they vote are total fucking idiots and I suggest you consider getting your head checked.
