Flooding on Las Vegas Strip

Didn't they spend a lot of money for flood control a few years ago?......guess that it didn't work
oh well, maybe it will fill the lakes back up

The Strip flooded from all the rain we’ve been having this monsoon season. This gives lazy river a whole new meaning

I rode my BMW cross country back in the 1980's and came through Vegas after a rain storm. The water was a foot high crossing I-15 south of Henderson.

Wow.......................I've been around the area where that video was shot. Hard to believe that they got that much rain!

It's the desert. It doesn't take that much because there is nothing to hold the water.

Interesting thing about pavement and asphalt (of which Vegas is covered in), but it cannot absorb water to prevent flooding. The water is unable to soak into the ground, so it just flows to where it can soak in, or become part of a river or stream that already exists. They have the same problem in places like Houston and San Antonio. When they get a lot of rain there, flooding results. And yeah, hopefully this will at least help to make a small dent in the drought that is currently going on.

It's not just the pavement. The desert itself has a layer about 6 inches deep called Caliche, it is as hard as cement.

I didn't realize that Vegas was sitting on top of that stuff. I know it can cause havoc in the form of flash floods in some of the canyons in the West. Matter of fact, Palo Duro Canyon in the TX panhandle has warnings for flash floods when it rains a bit.

Pretty much every desert out there has a caliche layer. It's a byproduct of millenia of leeching of the calcium from the upper sand layers.

It's been a long time since we've had a monsoon season like this. You could whitewater raft in that area of the strip where the Imperial Palace casino used to sit.
Flood control took the rapids out!

In any rock desert environment look for where the canyons are, that's the meeting point for the heavy rains when they do happen.

In urban areas look at old maps of where the canyons WERE.

The real fun is when one of these turns into a debris flow.
