I occasionally receive DOC. files and do not have a program to open them properly.

I've done searches for free file openers and almost every one of them get a warning of possible infection by my McAfee program.

Is there a free program I can get that doesn't have all the warnings?

Or install open office.

https://www.openoffice.org/

It's free and handles most MS Office file formats - even Project.

Thanks. I already have Open AND Libre and that's what I use.

The problem is that my publisher sends DOC. files and I can't seem to be able to open them or merge them with an Open file. Hopefully, the download iamwhatiseem provided will do the trick.:lol::lol:

Rather than search around on the Internet for this and that, Wordpad should be able to open these .doc files. I run Windows 8, and I still have that app. I know it was in XP, and I'm quite sure Windows 7 should have it. It has been around since Windows 3.1.

You're right. I think both Notepad and Wordpad open them. The problem is, the doc. I need to open contains editorial comments and changes I need to view, the same as in OpenOffice and LibreOffice you go to Changes and select Record and Show. I must then accept or reject each change.

Those changes do not appear in either Notepad or Wordpad.

Sounds like your publisher has a virus if your Symantec is kicking up.

Okay, let me make it clearer.

My publisher uses MSWord Office while I have MSWord Home that does not have the Edit/Changes feature. While Open and Libre are the same as office, they don't appear to be able to open the Office files my publisher sends me.

Oh well, sooner or later I'll figure it out.
