The FBI has fired one of the lead agents credited with thwarting a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer after he was charged with beating his wife following a swingers party, The Detroit News has learned.

The firing of Special Agent Richard Trask earlier this week comes amid questions about agent misconduct and whether as many as 12 informants were driving the alleged conspiracy.

Trask was fired, according to a source familiar with his case, while awaiting trial on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and allegations he smashed his wife's head against a nightstand and choked her after a dispute stemming from their attendance at a swingers' party in July. Trask also was moonlighting as a personal trainer and it was unclear if his superiors at the FBI were aware or had approved the job.

The basis of Trask's firing were unclear and FBI spokesman Mara Schneider would only confirm Saturday that Trask is no longer employed by the bureau.

Trask's lawyer could not be reached for comment immediately Saturday.

Trask, 39, of Kalamazoo, was the public face of the FBI in the Whitmer investigation. He testified in court proceedings for five men awaiting trial in federal court on a range of charges, including kidnapping and weapons of mass destruction conspiracies.

Earlier this month, prosecutors revealed they had decided not to use Trask as a witness during the Oct. 12 trial. The decision was announced as they referred to social media posts in which Trask called former President Donald Trump a douchebag and "piece of s---."

“They’re slicing him out,” said lawyer Michael Hills, who represents accused kidnap plotter Brandon Caserta of Canton Township. “They’re not calling him.”

Trask's arrest came as defense lawyers started to reveal a trial strategy that involves suppressing evidence, attacking the work of FBI agents and claiming FBI informants entrapped men accused in the conspiracy.

On Wednesday, defense lawyers asked a judge for a 90-day trial delay, saying they need more time to prepare and investigate the conduct of FBI agents who thwarted the alleged conspiracy.

". . . FBI Special Agent Richard Trask said in the criminal complaints that Munafo told the 911 dispatcher he knew where she lived and recited accurate information about her mortgage and tax obligations.

Munafo told the dispatcher that he would "maim her, kill her, and attack her family if she did not put a deputy or sergeant on the line,” according to the criminal complaint.

A separate criminal complaint alleges that Munafo, of New York, attacked a U.S. Capitol police officer the next day.. . . "

". . .In January, Trask testified in federal court against Delaware resident Barry Croft, accusing him of being the group's bomb maker. Trask said Croft was the national leader of the 3 Percenters, a small militia that was allegedly part of the January 6 US Capitol riots. Trask provided context about several undercover recordings that portrayed Croft as a violent extremist. On the other hand, defense lawyers portrayed their clients as tough talkers who never carried out any kidnapping plot but were simply exercising their First Amendment rights.. . ."

". . . Coulson used to run the Portland, Ore. FBI office and said the FBI has the jurisdiction under racketeering statutes to go after the activists who set fire and vandalized federal office buildings and threatened police.

“I am not demeaning what happened that day,” Coulson said of Jan. 6. “But I’m asking why [those] people are being punished at this level and others aren’t. In Portland and Seattle you clearly have federal laws being violated in plain sight and nothing done.”

Asked for comment, the FBI’s Portland office referred The Post to the bureau’s Washington, DC office, who pointed to FBI Director Chris Wray’s overall statement on FBI Oversight at the House Judiciary Committee last month.

“We do not investigate groups or individuals based on the exercise of First Amendment protected activity alone. But, when we encounter violence and threats to public safety, the FBI will not hesitate to take appropriate action,” Wray said at the time.

Renewed criticism of the FBI’s use of informants comes amid a set of embarrassing episodes for the G-men, starting last week with the arrest of Richard Trask, the lead agent in the attempted kidnapping case involving Whitmer.

Trask, 39, allegedly slammed his wife’s head into a nightstand and choked her with both hands after the pair had attended a swinger’s party, according to a report. The wife, who was covered in blood and had “severe” bruises around her neck, according to court documents, managed to stop the attack by grabbing his crotch, authorities said in court documents.

Last week, Special Agent Karen Veltri in Las Vegas claimed she was sexually harassed by a supervisor, who texted her a photo of a rainbow-colored dildo near his crotch, and spoke to her about his “ground balls,” the woman claimed in a lawsuit.

And in the latest black eye for the agency, a top FBI official was accused of having a fling with an underling, then participating in a personnel decision involving her lover. The Thursday report from the U.S. Department of Justice’s inspector general accused Jill Tyson, the assistant director of the bureau’s Office of Congressional Affairs, of misconduct and failing to disclose the relationship.. . ."

". . . The new details emerged as the accused ringleader, Barry Croft, 45, of Bear, Delaware, pleaded not guilty and was denied bond during a hearing in federal court in Grand Rapids. The hearing marked Croft’s first appearance in a Michigan courtroom since being charged alongside five others in October in a case that has focused national attention on violent extremism in Michigan.

Croft is the national leader of the 3 Percenters, a small militia that participated in the Jan. 6 insurgence at the U.S. Capitol, FBI Special Agent Richard Trask said during the hearing, which featured undercover audio and video recorded by FBI informants. At one point Wednesday, Croft was asked to stand and display the 3 Percenters tattoo on his hand.

Prosecutors used those ties while arguing Croft was dangerous, a flight risk and should remain jailed amid warnings from the FBI about potential armed protests by violent extremists at all 50 state capitols ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20. Lansing Mayor Andy Schor has asked Whitmer to activate the National Guard.

Prosecutors say Croft is a violent extremist who served as the bombmaker of a group that plotted to overthrow the government and targeted several other politicians, including President Donald Trump, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

“This is probably the most committed violent extremist of the entire group,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler told the magistrate judge. “There is no question this is a person committed to violent extremism and he is the one who brought the bomb.”

Croft's lawyer, Joshua Blanchard, objected to the government mentioning the 3 Percenters role in the Capitol riot and said Croft and others accused in the kidnapping plot were simply "airing grievances" and lacked a plan.

"I don't think that's enough," Blanchard told U.S. Magistrate Judge Sally Berens.

The judge, however, cited Croft's criminal record and violent rhetoric captured on secretly recorded FBI recordings in ordering the Delaware man jailed indefinitely.. . . "

Honestly? I don't know where the Deep State ends, and where the radicals and reactionaries start anymore. :sigh2:

But? When these establishment folks call you crazy for saying the Deep State had nothing to do with Jan. 6th? The circumstantial evidence is there if you are well read.

What does this have to with the investigation? The guys who are under arrest and await trial are accused of a kidnap conspiracy, which has nothing to do with trump. It seems like this thread is implying that these guys must be innocent because an investigator didn't like trump, which is absurd.

Correct, this is a mere blip. So fine, maybe this dude is a butthole who beat his wife and doesn't like Trump and he shouldn't be testifying. Doesn't mean they don't have the militia goons dead to rights.

This dirtbag fed isn't going to testify now. His personal actions have torpedoed the whole case, as he was the lead investigator. It's a matter of credibility and integrity. Oh. I get it now...

It shows the FBI is full of cuck faggots that hated President Trump and were willing to do anything to frame his supporters.

They face trial, at which the prosecutors will have to present a case. This "cuck faggot" thing is just garbage spewed by trashy right-wingers who are inarticulate. I mean, what is a "cuck faggot"?

A cuck faggot is someone who takes his wife to “swinger parties” to watch his wife have sex with other men. It’s an accurate description of this FBI agent.

He should be a great witness for the prosecution
