Coincidently, I was just talking to a South African colleague. I work in an environment where my colleagues come from around the world. She was encouraging me to do some of my traveling there. I mentioned the high crime rate, but she seemed to think that has more to do with where you go. Now, there are crimes in tourist resorts, yes, but that happens around the world. According to my colleague, who has lived all her life there, it depends on where you go; it depends on being aware of how to behave. Just like in the States, just like anywhere.
