REVEALED: Apple threatened to AX Facebook and Instagram from its app store on discovering social media sites were being used to sell and trade Filipina maids in Middle Eastern 'online slave market'

  • Apple threatened to pull Facebook and Instagram from the App Store in 2019
  • The move was triggered by a BBC report on maids being sold on the platforms, and has been revealed for the first time in newly-released internal documents
  • The women usually work in the Middle East and come from Africa and South Asia
  • Facebook knew about the posts selling poor maids as early as 2018 and codenamed the issue 'HEx' for 'human exploitation'
  • Facebook removed about 1,000 accounts across both platforms in response
  • The maids are still advertised in videos that list their biographies, in what one United Nations official calls an 'online slave market'

Not -- I repeat, NOT -- surprising.
