Some time ago I saw a show about a sunken Russian sub in the ocean. The CIA created this ambitious plan to have Howard Hughes publicly speak about mining the oceans. It was a front for the CIA efforts to extract this sub and they succeeded in doing so. Even convinced most that it failed, or was just partially successful when it was a coup.

More than one person participating in this show stated that they needed to be clandestine about the real purpose (to recover the Russian sub) because if the Russian knew their intentions they would be irate and it would start a war.

Have times changed so much in the shift of power than China can just grab a classified, cutting edge technology U.S jet? Would Trump, or even Bush have allowed this potential risk without a clear message to China about consequences?

A race against time is under way for the US Navy to reach one of its downed fighter jets - before the Chinese get there first.

The $100m (£74m) F35-C plane came down in the South China Sea after what the Navy describes as a "mishap" during take-off from the USS Carl Vinson.

The jet is the Navy's newest, and crammed with classified equipment. As it is in international waters, it is technically fair game.

Whoever gets there first, wins.

The prize? All the secrets behind this very expensive, leading-edge fighting force.
Seven sailors were injured when the jet came down on Monday after it struck Vinson's deck during a military exercise.

If the Vinson is already there, it would seem the site is secured and there's not much the Chinese could do so not much of a race.

Doesn't China already have all the technology and has improved on it? And wouldn't China have already shared it with Russia, if Russia even wanted it?

My information is that China and Russia have already move on in the field. Can we find an unbiased source to confirm any of it?

Not that it matters all that much. If any side begins to lose in a conventional war, they would quckly turn to nuclear weapons as an equalizer.

BBC isn't an unbiased source? What is CBC and The Star then?

BBC is far, far from unbiased. It's run by America's lapdog. Canada has been in the past but since Chretien we've been growing up. We need to keep the Conservative threat at bay and move forward under Trudeau to a more socially responsible world. I have confidence in China's peaceful methods so far at least.

Oh, the Soviets knew exactly what they were trying to do. The ship was under almost constant observation by "Fishing Trawlers" during the entire operation.

They simply believed that such a recovery was not possible. And they were half right.

But guess what? No war.

Right on, march forward Comrade.

China already openly stated they weren't interested in the crashed plane.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian was quoted as saying that China has ''no interest in their aircraft'' and added that the US should ''do things that are conducive to regional peace and stability, rather than flex muscles in the region.''

And, yes, China is already well advanced. In many instances they are far superior, technologically speaking.

No, they have not. In fact, the Chinese defense industry is still rather backwards even when compared to that of Russia.

First of all, they have had so many "stealth jet" programs it is not even funny. Most went nowhere and ultimately produced nothing. Their single actually working aircraft is the J-20, which uses a Russian made jet from the Su-27. Then there is the FC-31/F-60. It also uses a Russian engine. But there has been no interest from foreign customers, and most think it will likely lead nowhere other than once again their own use.

The H-20 is their "Stealth Bomber", but after over 20 years in development it still only exists on paper.

And no, not even the J-20 is a "stealth fighter". It has already been tested for its capabilities, and they are known. Head-on it is "stealthy", but from all other angles it is no more stealthy than a conventional fighter. And that is actually almost the same problem the Su-57 has. Decent stealth characteristics from the front, but at all other angles no real improvement over any other 3rd-4th generation fighters.

And neither one has come close to developing a craft anywhere close to the F-35C. Which is why Russia still uses the Su-33 and MiG-29 on their carriers, and China a stolen copy of the Su-33 called the J-15. Russia does not have any 5th Generation Naval Aircraft in development, and the FC-31 has been left in a "holding pattern" for the last decade. 4 prototypes since 2011, and like many of their programs they were relying upon foreign investors (Pakistan and India) to help them finish it. But no foreign investors have been interested, so it has largely stalled.

The Chinese defense industry is actually littered with such programs. Some of them over the decades have been spectacular, like the MBT-2000. So bad not even their own Army wanted it, so was really only sold to Pakistan and a few other countries. The PLA decided that even their 1980's era Type 80/88 tanks were better than the "Eternal Tank". Which by the way, comes with an engine and transmission from the Ukraine.

If China does go ahead and support Russia in that tiff as many expect, expect all Ukrainian shipments for engines and transmissions to end. And the PLAN is highly dependent on those also.
