I know I take a lot of shots at American conservatives, but I'd rather live in a society where people with whom I disagree are trying to restrict government than in a society of people who think there is not enough government.

The socialists in Europe think that taking a vacation is a "human right."

The European Union has declared travelling a human right, and is launching a scheme to subsidize vacations with taxpayers' dollars for those too poor to afford their own trips.

Antonio Tajani, the European Union commissioner for enterprise and industry, proposed a strategy that could cost European taxpayers hundreds of millions of euros a year, The Times of London reports.

"Travelling for tourism today is a right. The way we spend our holidays is a formidable indicator of our quality of life," Mr. Tajani told a group of ministers at The European Tourism Stakeholders Conference in Madrid on April 15. Mr. Tajani was appointed to his post by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

The plan -- just who gets to enjoy the travel package has yet to be determined -- would see taxpayers footing some of the vacation bill for seniors, youths between the ages of 18 and 25, disabled people, and families facing "difficult social, financial or personal" circumstances. The disabled and elderly can also be accompanied by one other person. The EU and its taxpayers are slated to fund 30% of the cost of these tours, which could range from youth exploring abandoned factories and power plants in Manchester to retirees taking discount trips to Madrid, all in the name of cultural appreciation.

"The commission is literally considering paying people to go on holiday," Mats Persson, of pro-reform think-tank Open Europe, told Britain's News of the World. "In this economic climate, it's astonishing that the EU wants to bribe people with cheap holidays."

Vacationing a human right, EU chief says

And Europeans wonder why they grow slower than America.

It's nonsense like this that makes it clear the EU is one of the worst things that could have happened to Europe.

The U.S. Federal Government is turning into our domestic version of the EU.

Just sayin'.

Why, this has been SOP in Scandinavia for quite some time now...And we all know what an economic juggernaut Norway is!

The only thing that keeps Norway from collapsing into insolvency is that it is the Saudi Arabia of Northern Europe. They have tons of oil money to support their social welfare system.

I work at a company where half the company is in Germany and 60% of the business is overseas.

Most of them only come here because they have to. The places they do go and spend their money is in blue states. They don't like Confederate Republicans. I told them it's not contagious.

Do you have to drop your pants to speak? Cuz you talk outta your ass.

For the record, most Europeans would not know a blue state from a red state. rdean is, as usual, talking out of his butt.

They do, hell I still remember NYCarribaner or whatver his name is saying "Socialism works in Europe"

Heck, I even dedicated a whole thread about how Socialist Policies screwed Spain from one of the most Innovating and Richest countries to the lowest of the low.

Most Europeans believe that they can see the Statue of Liberty and Grand Canyon on the same day with only a short drive or train ride. This proves nothing other than they have many wrong conceptions of what America is like. They believe you and YOU don't understand America either while you supposedly live here.

Having been married to a German, and spending 14 years total in Europe, and having a Son and Grandson who still live there, I can promise you that the average German actually does believe that they should get at least a 4 week paid and paid for vacation. And one of their favorite spots is La Costa Brava.

Not in the US, the average European would not know whether CA was more liberal or conservative than TX.

Don't be too harsh, some of us will go spend our free vacations in the US, you know:)
