ESPN releases new preseason Top 25 college football poll

There shouldn't be preseason polls at all. No polls until like 4+ games are played.

Preseason polls skew the rankings in favor of top programs. When you start high, even if you hiccup you won't fall as far.

History says that is simply not true. Many national championships were won by teams unranked or ranked very low early in the season. In 2010, Auburn started at #22 in the preseason poll and went undefeated to the be national champions.

Now, a nod to Winterborn, Alabama's dominance of college football has prevented a lot of that from happening recently..

The preseason polls are to satisfy the hardcore college football fans. And they are mostly accurate for what they are. But every season someone blows them up.

The sports writers that make most of the polls spend a lot of time studying the various teams. But it is based on last seasons performance and rumors of what is new. This doesn't work when someone truly phenomenal arrives on the scene without much of a track record. Auburn's 2010 season is a perfect example. The team looked solid but no spectacular based on what was known. That was because no one had seen Cam Newton play much, and especially not for an OC who knew how to utilize his talents.

As for Alabama, there is a proven track record of Saban reloading season after season.

Golly gee, and here I thought we would have a new batch of top rated teams that would finally change from the last 30 years

Who knew?

Well, over the last 30 years Alabama has been in the top 10 only about half the time.

In the last 15 years we have lived there.
