On a hill
Insurance is like going to Vegas to gamble.
You are betting you get sick... only way you will get a payout.
They are betting you won't.

Just received this years enrollment info.
3 Plans
PPO
- $776/mo Premium, $1,500 deductible per member with annual max OOP at $17,400 (inc. premiums paid)
A traditional plan more or less, you are betting $9,312 that you will get sick and have more bills than $1,500 each
HSA 1 - $428/mo Premium, $2,500 deductible per member with max OOP $11,336
You are betting less... $5,136 that you will get sick and have bills over $2,500.
HSA 2 - $199/mo premium, $7,000 deductible, but max OOP is only $9,038.
You are betting the least amount. Only $2,388 you will get sick and have bills over $7000.

Choice is simple.
Pay a lot of money to save a few bucks if you really get sick. Or pay less money and risk it.

It used to be so fucking simple.
Everyone paid the same, and the deductible use to be $500, and the premiums were less than 1/4 the cost of today's plans.

Our system is broke. Rigged to make Insurance companies a LOT of money, and only pay a dime if you have a major crises.

Insurance is a tool for the well off to protect their savings. It doesn't make health care more affordable, nor more available.

Most importantly, it's NOT means of socializing health care. But that's how we're trying to use it. And that's the problem.

As you can see above... there is really only one choice - the worst plan option. HSA 2
Compared to the PPO... HSA 2 is $6,924 cheaper. But you don't get shit until your bills are over $7,000. It is catastrophic care only. No matter what they call it. But the Max out-of-pocket is $8,000 less!!

We told you this in the 2000's and you didn't want health reform. Now you want healthcare reform?

Whose we? And no one has ever done healthcare reform in America. Obamacare was not healthcare reform. At all.
It didn't change anything except cover low income people at the cost of everyone else. Basically it is a form of taxation of sorts... everyone else pays more for higher deductibles so unemployed people get it for free.

Golly gee whiz, Obamacare is not working out?

Sounds like we need government run government controlled health care

Who saw that coming?
Obamacare is an abomination. Everyone pays more, for less coverage. PERIOD. It is not even arguable.
The only people who benefitted are VERY low income and long term unemployed, also known as bums.
Obamacare was not health care reform. It was a massive insurance increase called healthcare reform. You would think Democrats would hate it. But it has Obama's name on it. So it must be awesome. Even though, they were disappointed, and know they are paying more for less. Still... Obama...so it's awesome.

Wow, because you are low income you are a bum? Tons of people just starting out are low income.

That's some health reform. Before our system was very costly and didn't cover very much or very many. Now we pay just about the same and it covers more people. And pre existing conditions. And annual check ups are free. Stuff like that. It was a start. What do you want to solve next? Let's do it!

So back to the lousy choices...

PPO - You bet HEAVY that you are going to get sick, but you are also betting you don't get really sick... cause the max out-of-pocket is a whopping $14,000+. You get cancer or something... you're fucked. HARD.
HSA 1 - You bet less, but you are betting you don't get quite as sick... but also the Max OOP is still $11,336 if you get REAL sick.... yep... fucked.
HSA 2 - You are betting the least amount. But Essentially you don't get any coverage. None. Unless you get REALLY sick.
But since the Max OOP is only $9000... if you DID get cancer, you would be spending $5000 less than the PPO. Less fucked.

So the choice is pay a bunch to save money if you get pretty sick. but not seriously sick. Or pay less, but get nothing unless you are seriously sick.
And THAT is healthcare insurance today. Made worse by Obamacare. It was already getting sucky before Obama. Now it REALLY sucks.

You don;t know what you are talking about... at all.
For decades.... DECADES... healthcare was only a few hundred a month, many employers paid 100% of your premiums. So many actually paid NOTHING.
$500 was the average deductible. Do you even know what the hell a deductible is??????????????????
Max OOP used to be $3000 or so... tell me how better off we are that are OOP is $11,000 more so we can have one free checkup a year. REALLY??? That's a bargain???
Can you add???

Oh... and pre-existing conditions is new. It did not exist until the 1990s.

Yep. HSAs combined with catastrophic insurance are the best way to go. They used to be a much, much better deal - before ACA. In 2005, I had a catastrophic plan with a 5k deductible, and a 5k HSA. It was basically no-deductible insurance, for $150/mo.

Granted, that only works for people who can put 5k in an HSA. or if an employer is willing to do it for you. But for those who can't, I'm betting it would be cheaper, for the government, to just front them 5k and let them take care of their own insurance.

And of course the real beauty of the HSA is that it's your money to keep if you don't spend it on health care.

Costs have continued to rise and coverages become poorer just like noted in the OP. You don't get to change the facts.

Yea the insurance giants were denying people because they had pre existing conditions in the George Bush 2000's.

Why do you think insurance companies owe insurance to people who are already sick? Do you realize that makes no sense? That it's an irrational demand?
