Elephants born with no TUSKS after decades of brutal poaching in Africa, researchers say
ELEPHANTS are being born without tusks after decades of brutal poaching in Africa.
Researchers at Princeton University found the genetic condition in Gorongosa National Park in central Mozambique is no longer rare.

APResearchers found that half of female elephants in the park are now naturally tuskless[/caption]
NINTCHDBPICT000688278931.jpg
APPoachers slaughtered around 90 per cent of Mozambique’s elephant population to fund a civil war[/caption]
Around 90 per cent of the country’s elephant population were slaughtered between 1977 to 1992 by Kalashnikov-wielding hunters who wanted the ivory to fund a civil war.
Half of the female elephants are now naturally tuskless – it was previously less than a fifth.
The trait is only seen in female elephants, and is thought to be caused by a mutation in the X chromosome which is fatal to male elephants in the womb.
As with human traits such as eye colour, genes are responsible whether or not tusks are passed down to the offspring of the parents.
Elephants who did not have tusks were left alone by the poachers, so increasing the chances they would breed and pass on the genes to offspring.
Researchers have now published their findings in Scientist magazine after the genomes of both tusked and tusk-free elephants were compared.

Mod Edit: Removed a bunch of advertising from the quoted text.

Co-author Professor Robert Pringle, from Princeton University, indicated the findings could have a variety of long-term effects for the animals.
Prof Pringle noted that because the tuskless trait was fatal to male offspring, it was possible that fewer elephants would be born overall.
This, in turn, could slow the recovery of the species, which now stands at just over 700 in the park.
“Tusklessness might be advantageous during a war,” Professor Pringle said. “But that comes at a cost.”
He also noted the changes could also affect the landscape, as the study revealed the tusked and tuskless elephants ate different plants.
Prof Pringle though stressed that the trait was reversible over time as populations recovered from the verge of becoming extinct.
“So we actually expect that this syndrome will decrease in frequency in our study population, provided that the conservation picture continues to stay as positive as it has been recently,” he said.
“There’s such a blizzard of depressing news about biodiversity and humans in the environment and I think it’s important to emphasise that there are some bright spots in that picture.”

well, i don't know which God is responsible for this significant help for Earth's elephant population, but i'm very very grateful! :)

I find this a bit hard to believe.
It takes thousands of years for that kind of change to happen.

I agree, but read a similar article by Nature about same thing- elephants born without tusks due to poaching.

“In Mozambique, the selective poaching of elephants with tusks has led to a higher number of females being born without them.”

May all ruthless poachers step off cliffs to their deaths.

That doesnt mean it's true.
Environmentalist will say all kinds of crazy shit to support their goals.
Kinda like glowbull warming.

Well HWGA maybe I’ll visit Mozambique one day and will let you know. It will require learning one of the Bantu languages in order to ask around so it will be a few years.

If they kill off all the big bulls with great ivory tusks the gene pool changes and tuskless elephants have a better chance of survival.

it amazing me sometimes how stupid evolutionist can be,,

did you know through evolution icland has ended downs syndrome???

no not really,, all they did was kill all the children with it,,

in the case of the tuskless elephant all thats happened is the ones genetically set to have tusks have been killed off and the ones that didnt werent killed so now you have more without than with,,

sorry but you magical evolution didnt do anything here

That IS evolution.... adaptation for survival. When you removed bull elephants with large tusk from the gene pool you have elephants born without tusks or with very small tusks.

Well HWGA maybe I’ll visit Mozambique one day and will let you know. It will require learning one of the Bantu languages in order to ask around so it will be a few years.
Many in Mozambique speak Portuguese due to years of colonialism.

That IS evolution! There is a selective pressure created by humans favoring tusklessness. That is how evolution works. Evolution = a change in the frequency of an allele in a population.

Before you attempt to mindlessly criticize evolution, learn something about it first, ok?
that is not how evolution works,, thats how life works,, if you kill all the tall people and only short remain thats not evolution,,
evolution says the elephant turned into a goat or some other crazy made up thing of the day,,

More likely is a male elephant was born without tusks and survived to breed. Those genes got in the gene pool. Ones with tusks are weeded out unfortunately. Humans always put human needs over animals. No sense of appreciation for a population of other creatures.

Evolution takes many many generations to even start if the specie can first survive.

Evolution is a non-stop process, it is not huge leaps and bounds, it is small changes. More and more humans are being born without wisdom teeth due to the fact we no longer need them and end up taking them out of most humans

that is not how evolution works,, thats how life works,, if you kill all the tall people and only short remain thats not evolution,,
evolution says the elephant turned into a goat or some other crazy made up thing of the day,,

Nope.. Evolution doesn't turn an elephant into a goat or a chicken into a dog. Evolution is a natural process to adapt and survive. Its not magic or supernatural. You are in error because you don't know what evolution is.

If there is anyone left who is able to post on this thread, remember that this is in the CDZ

Evolution - Wikipedia

Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. These characteristics are the expressions of genes that are passed on from parent to offspring during reproduction. Different characteristics tend to exist within any given population as a result of mutation, genetic recombination and other sources of genetic variation. Evolution occ…
