Electricity generated from renewables surpassed coal in the United States for the first time in 2022, the U.S. Energy Information Administration announced Monday.

Renewables also surpassed nuclear generation in 2022 after first doing so last year.

Growth in wind and solar significantly drove the increase in renewable energy and contributed 14% of the electricity produced domestically in 2022.

“I’m happy to see we’ve crossed that threshold, but that is only a step in what has to be a very rapid and much cheaper journey,” said Stephen Porder, a professor of ecology and assistant provost for sustainability at Brown University.

Coal is still at 20%, “projected to go down” but has not.

Hydroelectric is 6%.

Natural gas is 39%.

They always ignore the hydropower part of 'renewables'. The left hates dams and places in the Western USA are tearing down dams and demanding more be torn down.

Maybe the OP should tell China, India, and Pakistan about coal being dead as they are building an enormous number of coal-fired power plants right now and into the future.

Did you know that in Europe Coal is producing more electricity than shitty renewables? Why is that, because Europe found out the hard way, and got smart, while morons like you just keep drinking that kool aid.

 
Only rich countries can contemplate the expiration of coal as a source for electric power. We could do it in the U.S. if "we" got our heads out of our asses and started promoting Nuke. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

The thing is, the Third World and the Developing World NEED coal, and will need more coal as time goes by. Because they need electricity that is cheap, plentiful, and reliable, and coal is that source. And they need fuel for cooking and heating their homes, and soon they will "need" air conditioning. And BTW, they will need gasoline and Diesel fuel to power their mopeds, motorcycles, motor scooters, and cars, not to mention agricultural equipment and buses and railroads.

Or aren't they entitled to come into the 21st century?

Every claimed disaster predicted for "global warming" can be overcome by engineering solutions. You can see it happening all the time around the world. It is not possible to have a city like New Orleans that is below sea level half the time. But we have it, don't we? Venice? Do you think the Italians are going to relocate the Venetians because the seas are rising? Not hardly. Are banks refusing to grant 30-year mortgages on the Florida coasts? Why not? Don't they hear Greta Thunberg???

Did you know right out side of Lamoore NAS is a vast solar farm. 10 months out of the year it is covered with dust up to 3 inches from the almond tree farms because grass just doesnt grow there. I asked my son who works at Lamoore how often does it rain to clean the panels. He said in February. That means 2 months out the year you get some kilowatts out of the farm, the rest of the year, you get nothing, because of that dust. You just cant get more stupid than a Marxist/Democrat.

This is 1 week when the rains stop...

Doubtful that is true, but the only reason it's even close is due to the Democrats war on the coal industry. Meanwhile China has more coal plants belching crap into the air than all the G20 countries combined.

And has slightly increased as a percentage worldwide. We're exporting a zillion tons a year the last few years. It's down but so is the 'global economy'.

Exports of Coal in the United States averaged 583.01 USD Million from 1996 until 2023, reaching an all time high of 1918.00 USD Million in June of 2022 and a record low of 104.00 USD Million in February of 2002. Biden has been fighting for the REd Chinese interests via driving down freight rates in the U.S. to help his employer Xi out.

Once the White House signaled it was open season on freight rail, federal agencies like the STB and the Agriculture Department joined the blame bandwagon, as well as public utilities. To explain curtailing its operations at its Big Bend power station in Florida, Tampa Electric blamed the railroad for insufficient coal rather than the coal mine. Truth be told, the coal was prioritized for another customer willing to pay more: China. As the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports, US coal exports to China skyrocketed from roughly 1.8 million tons in 2020 to nearly 13 million tons in 2021. The coal shortage facing Tampa Electric and many other electric utilities across the country has nothing to do with the railroads.

We ship even more to India.

Britain is having to BUILD new coal/oil electric plants, because the ones they have now cannot sustain the requirements for powering the nation AND powering the "wind energy" turbines to keep moving at the same time.

The USA also has the same problem, except we aren't building new coal/oil electric plants, we are burning out the ones we have, which will leave us dead if not updated or expanded within the next 5 years. The ones we have now are SO over abused/worked, that they constantly are in the flux of breakdown, and there are not enough repair professionals to keep them all repaired and going at the same time. By the time they fix one power station to work again, they have to to back to the one they just fixed and start all over again.
