CNN) -- A number of crucial Florida counties extended early voting on Sunday due to heavy turnout in the presidential battleground.

Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Hillsborough, Orange, Pinellas and Leon counties acted on their own discretion to keep polling areas open, local and campaign officials said.

Early voting technically ended in the state on Saturday.

But Democrats sought a court injunction to force the state to formally extend early voting ahead of Tuesday's election in key counties.

The complaint said waits of up to seven hours in "many cases" were the "result of polling facilities that are inadequate" to meet the needs of early voting. In some cases, lines "deferred or prevented" ballots from being cast, the complaint said.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott had refused earlier requests to extend early voting.
