Nah, the earthquake activity going on now is nothing all that unusual.

Haiti lies on two major faults that hadn't had a major quake in about 200 years, it was due.

Chile's had larger within the last 40 years, it's a triple plate boundary and very unstable. The northern and southern ends of the fault had let loose with the same size or larger quake both since 1960, but the middle that caused the latest shock was once again overdue.

Japan is no stranger to Mm 5.5 - 6.5 tremblors on a regular basis, particularly in the northern part of the country. They had a 6.8 the day of the Chile quake that didn't even register a blip on the news.

California and Alaska are literally just about always humming at some level, it's the nature of the beast.

One day Cascadia or NM (which shall not be named) will also go and it's going to be an unholy mess. But it's happened over and over for millions of years, and will probably keep happening for millions more. The talking heads love to play up disaster, it sells. But if you look back through the records there's nothing out of the ordinary going on.
