They are more correctly known as closed compound words.

When two words are used together to yield a new meaning, a compound is formed. Compound words can be written in three ways: as open compounds (spelled as two words, e.g., ice cream), closed compounds (joined to form a single word, e.g., doorknob), or hyphenated compounds (two words joined by a hyphen, e.g., long-term).

I have for a long time wanted to use closed compounds in the USMB game Keep a Word Delete a Word (www.usmessageboard.com/threads/keep-a-word-delete-a-word-2-0.306477/), but they technically don't count. Now I can have a little bit of revenge by posting them here.

I have also wanted to post hyphenated words in Keep a Word, but they don't count either, so let's include them here also, although I primarily would like to see closed compound words. There are lots of them! Some examples...

herein
friendship
sidewalk
highland

So double up and post closed compound words.

I don't think friendship is a compound word, the -ship at the end denotes something else, it's kind of like a suffix.
