Do Republican policies attract good teachers?

Rich Scott of Florida was on Morning Joe boasting about his 1.7 billion dollar cut from Florida education.

Gov. Rick Scott's proposed education budget: $1.75 billion in cuts

How he was able to end tenure for new teachers and make schools more efficient by increasing class size per teacher. Will the attacks on teacher's unions and teacher's salary attract good teachers? Will anyone want to be a teacher after this?

Other reports say he used that 1.7 billion to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations.

Will these attacks on education to create more revenue for the wealthy "work"? Is this good for America? Will children learn more in larger classes? What is the Republican goal for education? How will their plan help children? Do they even want to help children?

Well, if there WERE'NT a union, I might consider the job.

But there is, so I won't and never did.

Whew, good. I would be afraid for the children. Glad you moved on to something else. Hopefully something less destructive.

Republicans scream they want better teachers. Lowering their salaries and taking away their security is a "fine" place to start. Republicans are like Midas. Only every ill conceived notion and awful plan they manage to foist on the American people turns everything to shit, not gold. Again and again I ask what Republicans have done for America in the last 20 years and they can't name a single thing they are proud of. Not one. But the list of their disasters is long indeed. Very long. I know they complain I'm ragging on them, but failure needs to be pointed out. Otherwise, they start to believe one of their misguided policies may have worked. None have.

oh boy, more whining about TEACHERS...Didn't the Dear Leader say we ALL had to have some skin in the game.?

I guess that only applied to the little peons..

Tenure was just a way of rewarding the worst teachers at the expense of the good ones. Teachers should have no more security than any other employee. If they do a bad job, they should be fired. The salaries of teachers should reflect their actual working hours. Of all workers in the country, teachers work the fewest hours. Yearly, they would be described as part time.

To republicans the government does the best job when it does the least.

Has anyone ever noticed the correlation between the consolidation of schools and bigger classes and the decline of the American education? Smaller classes allow teachers to teach students. Smaller classes allow the teachers to get to know the students, what their strong points are, what their weaknesses are, and gives them a chance to grow. Large classrooms are impersonal and the fringe students are marginalized and tossed away. New and bigger is not always right.

Get the illegals out of school and reduce class size. That's a good way.

One of the worst obstructions to education isn't the size of the class. It's the disruptors in the class, the special ed students who act out and are uncontrollable, the kids who think it's fun to start fights and beat up students and teachers alike. Those are the greatest impediments to class education not class size. It's just not PC to point that out.

I have not noticed that correlation. The low performing public schools here have small classes. The marquee public and private schools pack them in.

Budget cuts are not a Republican policy, they are a lack of money.

Good point, except the trend has actually gone the other way over the years, and the average class size has actually gone down. Still a good point though, you should repeat it every time anyone mentions education spending.

No, Republican policies are horrendous. Those charter schools in Florida? Fail.
But, this is Florida's grand master plan: Privatize every thing to shift public money into charter schools with a history of failure. They have been on this track for awhile. They had reduced the requirements needed to graduate and if you have a kid that has been in the Florida system and then transfers to another state they may not graduate on time. They may not have enough credits.

Educators are taught to teach to the individual child so that school districts can get around actually paying for services by those trained to work with disabilities. So, many kids are mainstreamed into classes when they shouldn't be. It makes it harder to teach and everybody loses. The republican response is: Herr derr-it's the teachers.

For the past 10 years they have been taking newly graduated first and second year teachers and hiring them and then dropping them so that they can get out of a contract. They publically denounce those teachers, usually an entire group, so that the school board members can campaign on that. If there were not those school board members with a smidge of integrity to come out and admit it, the sham would continue.

Tenure allows teachers to teach. This keeps those flakes on the school board or parent can have you fired for not creationism as a valid theory in a biology class. It keeps some hilljack that does not think that your history class is 'Merican 'nuff from getting you fired.
Republicans or, many republicans, want to turn education into K-Mart.

Unlike the federal government, states cannot just borrow money to spend on anything they want,

Slashing education also frees up funds to give tax cuts to Billionaires and Millionaires. That's the real reason. Do a little research. Find out where that money actually went once it's cut.

Is that why all those Democrats in California slashed the education budget?

You know rdean, if you could just get your head out of your ass long enough to understand that a biased source is as good as no source, then maybe someone might actually take you seriously.

I mean come on:

Wow! I guess you have never known any teachers. I have never known a single teacher, other than adjunct college instructors that work anywhere near part-time.

When I was young and my kids were little I used to live in this extremely overpopulated upper middle class neighborhood where there were 35 kids per teacher. There was not a single illegal there, the special ed kids never disrupted the class room, and there were not any fights how can you solve this problem? I just moved.

My children go to a public school were there are 11 students per teacher and it is in the top 2% in the nation beating most private schools. So, maybe anecdotal evidence is not really going to solve this problem.

Yeah, I personally think that Florida is not a good place to raise children. Their schools are horrible and you might have to take a bus very far to get a sub-par education and the rate of stranger child abductions there is 3x the national average.

Are teachers in it for the money and the bennies and screw the kids? I think that's your point. What happens if ...gasp...teachers have to contribute to their own retirement ? Will they quit in droves and find another job that gives them the whole summer off? Don't make me laugh.
