and are union dues tax deductible. I read that they are not?

For tax years 2018 through 2025, union dues – and all employee expenses – are no longer deductible, even if the employee can itemize deductions. However, if the taxpayer is self-employed and pays union dues, those dues are deductible as a business expense.

In December 2017, President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) into law. Among its many flaws, the act worsened a tax code double standard that tilts the scales against workers. Employers, especially large corporations, have the upper hand at the negotiating table for many reasons, including their ability to fully write off, or deduct, management and legal costs, such as those involved in resisting unionization campaigns and negotiating with unions. Meanwhile, workers, who are often represented by unions in these negotiations, cannot deduct the cost of the dues they pay to support their unions. In other words, workers cannot deduct an important cost of earning their income, while employers can deduct the costs of maximizing their profits at the expense of workers.

Unions are not workers.

Saying they don't favor unions, over corporations is true. But when you claim the tax law "favors corporations over workers".... Unions and workers are not the same thing.

I've know Union bosses that sit on their ass, collecting millions from workers, and provide zero benefit to those workers.

I was at Kroger, when workers had to pay union dues, and had zero benefit over working at non-union shops. You just pay money... and get nothing.

Unions and workers are not the same.

Especially since there are government unions and they act as political entities. . . as such, making them "tax deductible," is akin to having the tax payer fund the DNC?

C'mon Penny, use yer head.

I realize that , but the tax returns are the workers.

So it seems you two above are against unions.

I'm using my head. And their to fund the DNC such as you said is ridiculous.. Its individual tax returns!!

The Op is from a party that likes to tax everything.........then says they don't like the extra tax from those working.

One day they will make up their mind...............

Too many Unions to mention except for the Laborers and Hodcarriers Union. $9,19 and one half cent per hour was good money in 1978.

The biggest yelling point from the left over the taxes........was the loss of deducting HIGH PROPERTY TAXES..........which Blue States love to keep EXTREMELY HIGH..........not to mention inflating the value of those properties by restricting new buildings and regulations from hell.........like 100k more to build a home in places like Cali....................then wonder why the people are struggling there........

You love high taxes..........you vote for it.............then bitch and moan about it........Whiners from hell........make up your mind.

If unions weren't funding political activities? You might have a case. . . but you are summarily diss----missed.

Never been in a union.
In fact the Carpenters Union tried to get into residential construction and was voted down by the workers. Only carpenters in MN that are unionized are commercial construction. There is such a shortage of workers, you can pretty much pick your job and pay.

I'm sure tramp would like to disband the Unions, wonder how the police unions and boil makers , GM unions would like that. Republicans want a right to work states, it will be in the employers right to fire anyone , even if they don't get along with the boss.

The country’s largest police union, the National Fraternal Order of Police, which endorsed Trump, asserted in its brief that a ruling in Janus’ favor would lead to a “death spiral” for law enforcement.

“When individuals begin to forgo their union membership, this problem continues to compound itself,” the police union wrote. “Less members means the union must continue to make up the difference by imposing higher dues and providing reduced services...once union membership enters this tailspin, unions themselves may begin to fold.”

We never have been in unions. In Mi they use to have prevailing wage but the GOP repealed it.

That is how it is all over, the end of the unions and workers rights as I see it.
The unions have a place, but they have too many benefits like the FOP.

Yes I'm aware, the police unions have nothing to worry about. They are not going to bust them up.
In the end we will only have police unions. They pick and chose whether they are in the union or not, and they don't want to give up their legal rights.

that is the Mi, I'm sure every state is the same.

So union dues went out when the Supreme Court ruled that you can decide if you chose to belong to a union or not.

Nah...And I am going to tell you why....I grew up in Lansing MI...Now, if you don't know what that means as far as unions go, then you are uneducated to the matter...Lansing is in the heart of UAW country...Nearly every friend I had, had a dad that was in the union....

I saw good come from unions, and bad as well...But, as a Republican, I would say that there is a place for unions...But, it has to be a balance...It's like "Socialism" in this country...Do we do some things that are socialistic in nature? yes. But, anything 100% in charge is bad if you ask me...

Nope.

But I used to get picketed all the time, whenever I had to go into center city Philadelphia. They actually pay guys to stand on corners and watch out for non-union trucks and vans.

I'd have projects at the children's hospital or whatever, I've bascally had guys in about half the buildings in Philly, to be honest, and sometimes I'd have maybe four or five trucks lined up and about twenty installers and the head of the union would always showed up again.

He was a nice feller, we got along great otherwise. Every single time, though, he'd pull up and they'd get their signs out and start picketing. He'd say, its nothing personal, but we have to do it.

Then a couple hours later, I guess some money would change hands and I'd get my guys in there doing the work.

A few times I ended up having to let some of the union guys work with us, but almost every single time I'd have to send my guys behind them to undo their shoddy work. I never really figured out whether they were purposefully doing shoddy work or not, but I always made sure someone came behind them and checked. I thnk maybe they just werenlt familiar with the modern systems at the time. So, I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

That's probably the only experience with unions I've ever had.

So you support deductions? Because if you want deductions, then you can't complain when Amazon uses deductions too.

I have solution to this. Flat tax. Everyone pays the same flat tax. 10% seems like a good start.

Then you don't have to worry about one person getting a better or worse deal than anyone else, because absolutely everyone will get the exact same tax rate.
