The bad news is that producing the solar panels in China using coal-fired electrical power plants to generate electricity will produce almost as much CO2 as the fossil fuel plants the solar power is supposed to replace.Manufacturing solar panels is a dirty business. Starting with the raw mineral quartz, the refining process produces the highly toxic substance, silicon tetrachloride, that some manufacturers simply end up dumping. Huge amounts of power and heat must be used to manufacture the photovoltaic cells.Since most solar cells in the west are manufactured in China, that heat and power are generated by coal-fired electricity. Maybe someone should ask why we’re buying solar cells to save the planet from carbon pollution when the process of making them not only poisons the earth but dumps as much carbon into the atmosphere as energy produced solely by fossil fuels.It’s true that after a few years of operation, a solar panel will eventually lead to a net reduction in carbon emissions compared to power generated by fossil fuels. But is the loss in efficient generation of power worth the difference?...

Is China building a future in green tech by solar and batteries?As impressive a list of Green Energy plans by China, they aren’t punishing their own carbon and fossil fuel energy companies; and they sure as hell aren’t being dictated to by some global signatory (Paris Accords) and Greta Thunberg and her parents dare not bring their show into China
The US ought to be able to pursue Green and renewables without punishing its carbon and fossil energy companies.

Because China is communist they have a schedule for when the heat is turned on or off... usually distributed by means of steam. If it's cold before or after that window of heat you are going to freeze.
So most residents get buckets of coal on their own to burn to try and stay warm...and yes they burn the coal in literal buckets most times....some have decrepit stoves to burn them in reminisce of a Franklin stove. None of these means have catalytic converters but the smog (definitely not fog) gets so thick that you literally cannot see across the street...or even see the street in front of your apartment.
