Van Halen I & II were the best they did. After that it was pure shark jumping and MTV play.
It is always a shame to see a band fall into the corporate brand trap and create songs for quick sale than genuine creations.

One of my favorite rock albums is Van Halen I

It’s hard to write great songs. They wrote enough. The jump the shark was OU812. It was good but Van Halen was done writing hits after that for me.

I am probably bias since Aerosmith is one of the bands I cut my teeth on back in the day.
My favorite rock album of all time is Aerosmith Rocks made in 1976. One of those rare albums where you can play the entire album and not want to skip. IMO - Jamies got a gun was horrible. Something they came up with in 10 minutes.
You listen to the complexity and successful melody shifts of "Nobody's Fault" for instance and compare that to the repetitive/easy play of Jamies GAG... there is no comparison.
And Steve Tyler's MTV gigs with Michael Jackson and anyone else where there was someone willing to write a check - absolutely killed it for me. He is dead to me.
