Immigrant-rights activists yesterday renewed their push to allow legal noncitizens to vote in the Big Apple.

A bill that would grant permanent residents and other legal immigrants the right to vote in municipal elections has been stalled in the City Council since last year.

"More than 50,000 adult noncitizen taxpayers in those two districts are disenfranchised by citizenship voting laws," said Cheryl Wertz, of New Immigrant Community Empowerment, referring to today's special election for council seats in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), the sponsor of the Voting Rights Restoration Act, said that years ago, when immigrants were mostly European, they had voting rights.

"Then when the complexion of immigrants changes, then all of a sudden, the laws change," he said.

Im sure that if immigrants were allowed to vote, they would.

US citizens take voting for granted and end up letting the stupidest 30% of americans elect GW twice.

Thank you for demonstrated the contempt liberals have for the people.

Immigrants are allowed to vote, they just have to become citizens to do so. That's not terribly unreasonable is it? Do we really want terrorist sleeper cells who are here legally voting in our elections?

What would they vote for exactly?

Would they have joined the 30% of americans and vote for the war?

Or as the horrible terrorists thay are, would they vote Democrat? just to stick it to Republicans.

You obviously think that GW has done such a shit job protecting the US that there are enough terrorist sleeper cells here to effect the vote.

Now why do you assume the 'stupidest' vote? By what criteria? When has voting fallen to the 30%tile?

What a way to endear people and have them vote for the Dems

So now libs want noncitizens and convicted felons to vote - what is next members of al Qaeda? That would be one way they could show Dems their appreciation for all their loyal support and help

My apologies, 50% of the population votes, 30% of that, vote Republican. The same 30% that still approve of Bush.

They still approve of Bush.
and now only 22% approve of the Dem Congress - what does that make them?

Libs usually have that opinion of anyone who disagrees with them. Here I thought libs were tolerant of others
