Delinquent Taxpayers

I am curious how hard states and federal agencies go after delinquent taxpayers. I'm working on my taxes like many and went to my states dept of revenue website and found a link listing delinquent taxpayers. The top 100 is staggering and this is just for WI. I can't imagine what California or New Yorks looks like. Seems to me all our budget problems would be fixed if we could make these people pay up!

I bought a Sub Chapter "S" Corp a number of years ago, and got some bad advice on how to deal with the interest I was paying on the note to buy the company.

The IRS came after me HARD, but as it turned out, I simply had to refile, and they ended up OWING me money.

I understand THAT could cost an agent their job.

So I'd say their pretty much like a bulldog when it comes to collecting.

I think where they lose it, is in negotiating the debt down just to get paid.

This is why taxing income is stupid. It is too easy to cheat. It only requires complicity on the part of the individual to lie. It is much harder to cheat a consumption tax, requiring that both the seller and buyer be party to the fraud.
