ALL OF THE COUNTRIES WHICH THE U.S. “REGIME CHANGED” – IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN. SYRIA, AND LIBYA – HAVE DESCENDED INTO BRUTAL CHAOS
Quantifying the Effects of Regime Change

Since 2001, the U.S. has undertaken regime change in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya.

All 4 countries are now in chaos … and extremists are more in control than ever.

Iraq

In Iraq, hardcore Islamic jihadis known as ISIS have taken over much of the country – shown in red as the new “Islamic State” or self-described caliphate – using captured American weapons:

Christians are being rounded up and killed, and Christian leaders in Iraq say the end of Christianity in Iraq is “very near”. But as we documented in 2012, Saddam Hussein – for all his faults – was a secular leader who tolerated Christians.

Libya

Libya has also descended into absolute chaos. We reported in 2012:

Al Qaeda is now largely in control of Libya. Indeed, Al Qaeda flags were flown over the Benghazi courthouse once Gaddafi was toppled.
(This is – again – in contrast to toleration of Christians under Gadaffi.)

The Guardian noted in March:

According to Amnesty International, the “mounting curbs on freedom of expression are threatening the rights Libyans sought to gain“. A repressive Gaddafi-era law has been amended to criminalise any insults to officials or the general national congress (the interim parliament). One journalist, Amara al-Khattabi, was put on trial for alleging corruption among judges. Satellite television stations deemed critical of the authorities have been banned, one station has been attacked with rocket-propelled grenades, and journalists have been assassinated.

***

Ever since the fall of [Gadaffi's] dictatorship, there have been stories of black Libyans being treated en masse as Gaddafi loyalists and attacked. In a savage act of collective punishment, 35,000 people were driven out of Tawergha in retaliation for the brutal siege of the anti-Gaddafi stronghold of Misrata. The town was trashed and its inhabitants have been left in what human rights organisations are calling “deplorable conditions” in a Tripoli refugee camp. Such forced removals continue elsewhere. Thousands have been arbitrarily detained without any pretence of due process; and judges, prosecutors, lawyers and witnesses have been attacked or even killed. Libya’s first post-Gaddafi prosecutor general, Abdulaziz Al-Hassadi, was assassinated in the town of Derna last month.

When residents of Benghazi – the heartland of the revolution – protested against militia rule in June last year, 32 people were killed in what became known as “Black Saturday”. In another protest in Tripoli last November, 46 died and 500 were injured.

Under militia rule, Libya is beginning to disintegrate. Last summer forces under the command of the warlord Ibrahim Jadran took control of eastern oil terminals …. These forces which hijacked a oil tanker this month, prompting threats from Libya’s prime minister that it would be bombed until US forces captured it this weekend. Clashes have broken out in Jadran’s home town of Ajdabiya. In painful echoes of Iraq’s nightmare, a car bomb exploded at a Benghazi military base last week and killed at least eight soldiers, and Libya’s main airport was shut on Friday after a bomb exploded on its runway...

I guess you can throw Egypt and Ukraine in there too. Both are now tragic violent messes as well.

Here's another chapter to add to the mess in Libya.

BBC News - Diplomat to oversee mass Filipino evacuation from Libya

A senior diplomat from the Philippines is flying to north Africa to supervise the evacuation of 13,000 citizens from Libya after a Filipino worker there was beheaded and a nurse gang-raped.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario is going to Tunisia to arrange the exodus of the workers and their dependents. They are mostly based in the cities of Benghazi, Misrata and Tripoli. Libya has been gripped by violence involving militias that spearheaded the 2011 uprising against Muammar Gaddafi.

The Philippine government ordered a compulsory evacuation on 20 July, soon after the beheaded body of a Filipino construction worker - who was abducted five days earlier - was found in Benghazi.

Many Western governments - including the UK, France, Germany and the US - have already asked their citizens to leave the country. Several have also evacuated their embassies.

If only Wrongpublicans hadn't thrown a fit about President Obama exercising his constitutional authority as commander-in-chief, so much of this chaos could've been averted, and so many Libyan lives could've been saved.

Obama was wrong intervening in Libya, Egypt, Ukraine, and Syria. We'll be living with the Blow Back on it for many years to come. They were not our Wars. We should have stayed out of them. 'Regime Change' isn't always in our best interest.

US wasn't involved in Ukraine, Syria or Egypt. And only minorly involved in Libya.

Throw in the Ukraine. Big time.

Now I'm not giving Bush a pass but I would debate Iraq only in the sense that as far as an ME country goes (and I'm putting balanced in proportion to other crap going on there) it was fairly balanced UNTIL Obama wanting desperately to depose Assad turned a blind eye to ISIS who have become the wealthiest and the most powerful terror army on the planet.

Hence they invaded Iraq and have become billionaire jihadists.

Wanting to overthrow Assad has completely destabilized the region.

Ditto Afghanistan. It was doing not too bad (again everything in perspective here) till Obama decided it was high time to negotiate with the Taliban and facilitated an embassy for them in Qatar.

Obama went so far as to not inform or allow the President of Afghanistan to be present in those meetings.

As you can tell he is pro Sunni (ISIS/Muslim Brotherhood/Taliban) and really has wanted Maliki in Iraq gone, Assad to be toast and Karzai to vanish as well.

And we know how badly Egypt went for him. The Egyptians hate him more than anyone on the planet now for giving them his puppet Morsi and the MB.

Libya. OMG. Just class it as a dog's breakfast.

And we all know how well that coup the west backed in Kiev is going.

Nah, just stating the reality. Your Government is currently funding & arming factions in Libya, Ukraine, Egypt, and Syria. It's fact. You choosing to ignore reality, doesn't mean it's not reality. Just follow the money. It leads to those countries. It's not a secret. The funds are appropriated in a public manner. Just do some research.

When did the US do regime change in Egypt? And Egypt has stabilized quite a bit since Al Sisi was ekected Presisent.

Yes Bush lied and tragically destabilized Iraq and the bloodshed to this day goes directly on his ignorant decision to ignore the work of UN inspectors and start a war and regime change in Iraq based on a lie.

The situation with IS in Iraq is horrible but perspective must be kept that their terror and bribery driven advance has worked only in Sunni areas of Iraq.

But lumping Afghanistan in with Iraq is irresponsible and flawed thinking. The US had the inherent right to self defence to remove the Taliban from power in 2002. That should not be forgotten. And anyone suggesting that Afghanistan could have been left as it was prior to September 11, 2001 has little understanding of what was a stake and still is. Three hundred thousand Afghan army and police have fought in the lead for over a year and are being tested everyday. The Iraqi army did not have the kind of test that we've seen the Afghan security forces go through that past few years.

No one currently in power in Egypt was elected. They're in power by way of an illegal military coup. And the U.S. Government is now funding and arming that illegal regime. Like i said, just follow the money. It leads to those countries. It's public record.

With all due respect you are full of fucking shit.

That makes no sense. Afghanistan was on the brink of collapse to the Taliban in 2008. Obama orderered a troop increase immediately and launched the largest (since Vietnam) air to ground assaults against the Sunni enemy in Helmand and Khandahar provinces during the first three months of his presidency.

Five years of Taliban momentum was reversed by 2010. The Taliban have never regained momentum that they enjoyed under Bush when he put the US military into the quagmire in Iraq.

Obama has quadrupled the number of Taliban and AlQaeda kills over four years.

Any willingness to discuss peace with the Taliban has not changed the steadily increasing ability of the Afghan Security forces to defend Afghanistan in the lead and allowing the majority of outside troops to witdraw on the schedule that Obama has set.

Some find comfort in pretending we're not involved with these awful messes. Ignorance is bliss i guess.

Oh but Paul you have to remember that Obama wanted Mubarak deposed and installed Morsi more or less. No one else could have won against him. Removing Mubarak was an illegal coup as well. Think about it. This was no bullshit Arab Spring. It was all about the West trying to put puppets in they thought they could control.

Obama did not like this overturn of power in Egypt because they have gone after who he has backed all along. The Muslim Brotherhood.

He freaked that they threw Morsi and the MB out of power and was considering cutting off funds to Egypt.

Remember he even sent Lindsay Graham and John McCain to Egypt to beg them not to incarcerate Morsi and the MB.

Ah, Obama hates the new powers in Egypt but he doesn't dare fuck with them again. They won't let him.

And I think it was PEW who did a global survey on who hated Obama the most. Egypt topped the list.

They knew who put them under the thumb of the MB till they were righteously tossed.

Next PAul will tell us the Reagan changed the regime in Lebanon, Syria, Algeria, Sudan, Barbados, Grenada, Libya and the USSR...

Mubarak abused his positioned and did a no-no.

Do tell? What no no was that which could cause America's interference in a country?

Or what did Gaddafi do out of the blue to make Obama and the west jump to depose him?

How about Syria? There is no rebellion. From the get go this was a move by the west and Qatar and Saudi Arabia to toss Assad.

Paid mercenaries and terrorists were the faux Arab Spring rebels.

The Ukraine? Really what fucking business is it of ours?

How would we like it if Putin decided that Obama or Harper or Cameron had abused their positions and did a no no and armed rebels in the US, Canada or Britain?

I don't think we'd like it at all. Yet this is what we have been doing overseas. We have a lot of balls bitching at Putin. Sheer hypocrites our leaders are.

We orchestrated that military coup to remove an Islamist terrorist regime that was planning to kill the Christians in Egypt.
