Here, there, and everywhere.
Bulgaria has significant problems with corruption and money laundering. Nevertheless, the European Union is prepared to accept the country as the next member of the eurozone. Many fear that might be a bad idea.

^ "Of course, Bulgaria is more than welcome to join the euro, but it first must get a handle on its problems in the area of money laundering and corruption," says Sven Giegold, a Green Party member of European Parliament who traveled to Bulgaria together with party ally Daniel Freund to investigate the country’s readiness for the common currency. The EU, says Giegold, must prevent a situation in which a member state becomes a hub of large-scale money laundering, as has happened in the past in Cyprus or the Baltic states.

I think Bulgaria had a GREAT chance to transition when King Simeon 2 was elected Prime Minister in 2001. I don't think he could break the Corruption that the Communists bequeathed Bulgaria. In 2005 he had to form a Coalition with the Bulg. Socialist Party. After that I don't know much but of late it seems that a lot of anti-Corruption fervor has hit the Government for six. I don't know how successful GERB was in attacking corruption; I suspect the corrupt have managed to find pathways to exercise their foul deeds.

This is a "I don't know" but the conservative GERB Party looks like being in coalition again;

.......but I have no knowledge of how much corruption is still there. It was a massive problem when Simeon became PM in 2001 and having to form a Gov with the Socialists for a second term enabled Bulgaria to enter the EU. Since 2009 the GERB Party has had the ascendancy but this year the situation is unstable. I do know that the corruption is a legacy of the Communists but I am also sure that opportunists have nailed their colours to the mast.

Alas according to the Sofia Globe:

Bulgaria’s 2021 elections: Former caretaker ministers present new party

"
Petkov told a news conference: “You all know that in the past four months we started the change and had specific and clear goals”.

He said that the first goal had been to stop corruption and theft, “a good example was Bulgarian Development Bank”.

The second goal was to free small and medium businesses to work smoothly. The National Revenue Agency had shifted its priorities from “small shops” to large companies with large public procurements.

The third was to attract high-tech investments. “You saw that in just four months we attracted a large electric car plant to Lovech,” Petkov said.

The fourth priority was fairer distribution of wealth, he said. “The Budget (revision) has shown just that, when we can both reduce the deficit and distribute funds among retirees, people in health care and education”.

“You know us. We are not adding anything new here, we want to continue these four months in the next four years,” Petkov said."

Corruption NUMBER 1............................I cannot judge as I know little about these guys.
