Or uh gun
I think I read 1984 for the first time when I was 13 or 14, so it must have been in the late sixties. It was right about the time of Woodstock, as I recall. The one line in it that most resonated with me was this : "in a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act. 1984 seemed a long way off back then.

I'm sure all but the most benightedly ignorant among us is familiar with the details, but what struck me most was the account of the state media dispensing the party line to the unquestioning faithful. It was all lies, of course, but that did not matter because all that mattered was not the actual truth, but the power of the state being used to SAY it was the truth. Big Brother ruled.

Back in 1968, I never thought we would see the day, but our media is now telling us that city block's worth of businesses being burned to the ground are "peaceful" protests, that 300 pound thugs grabbing 110 pound store clerks by the neck and tossing them aside like a ragdoll are "Gentle Giants" and that teenage boys standing in place smiling placidly are public enemy #1 for standing there and smiling as an aggressive old old crack head is intruding on his space and pounding a drum in his face.

With all of this in mind, I feel compelled to ask Is Cnn, Msnbc and others our new big brother? Are we already to our time of universal deceit?

Why are you being an idiot?
"It should be noted that there is now no intelligentsia that is not in some sense “Left”. Perhaps the last right-wing intellectual was TE Lawrence."
