FULL TRANSCRIPT: Clinton Takes On Fox News

Today, President Bill Clinton taped an interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace, which is scheduled to be aired Sunday. He was told the interview would focus on his nonpartisan efforts to raise over $7 billion to combat the world’s biggest problems.

Early in the interview, Wallace attempted to smear Clinton with the same kind of misinformation contained in ABC’s Path to 9/11. Clinton was having none of it.
ThinkProgress has obtained a transcript of the interview. Here are some highlights –

Wallace repeats Path to 9/11 misinformation, Clinton fights back:

WALLACE: When we announced that you were going to be on Fox News Sunday, I got a lot of email from viewers, and I got to say I was surprised most of them wanted me to ask you this question. Why didn’t you do more to put Bin Laden and al Qaeda out of business when you were President? There’s a new book out which I suspect you’ve read called the Looming Tower. And it talks about how the fact that when you pulled troops out of Somalia in 1993, Bin Laden said “I have seen the frailty and the weakness and the cowardice of US troops.” Then there was the bombing of the embassies in Africa and the attack on the USS Cole.

CLINTON: OK..

WALLACE: …may I just finish the question sir. And after the attack, the book says, Bin Laden separated his leaders because he expected an attack and there was no response. I understand that hindsight is 20/20.

CLINTON: No let’s talk about…

WALLACE: …but the question is why didn’t you do more, connect the dots and put them out of business?

CLINTON: OK, let’s talk about it. I will answer all of those things on the merits but I want to talk about the context of which this arises. I’m being asked this on the FOX network…ABC just had a right wing conservative on the Path to 9/11 falsely claim that it was based on the 9/11 Commission report with three things asserted against me that are directly contradicted by the 9/11 Commission report. I think it’s very interesting that all the conservative Republicans who now say that I didn’t do enough, claimed that I was obsessed with Bin Laden. All of President Bush’s neocons claimed that I was too obsessed with finding Bin Laden when they didn’t have a single meeting about Bin Laden for the nine months after I left office. All the right wingers who now say that I didn’t do enough said that I did too much. Same people.
Clinton takes on Fox News bias:

WALLACE: Do you think you did enough sir?

CLINTON: No, because I didn’t get him.

WALLACE: Right…

CLINTON: But at least I tried. That’s the difference in me and some, including all the right wingers who are attacking me now. They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try and they didn’t…I tried. So I tried and failed. When I failed I left a comprehensive anti-terror strategy and the best guy in the country, Dick Clarke… So you did FOX’s bidding on this show. You did you nice little conservative hit job on me. But what I want to know..

WALLACE: Now wait a minute sir…

CLINTON:…

WALLACE: I asked a question. You don’t think that’s a legitimate question?

CLINTON: It was a perfectly legitimate question but I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked this question of. I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked: Why didn’t you do anything about the Cole? I want to know how many you asked: Why did you fire Dick Clarke? I want to know…
WALLACE: We asked…

CLINTON:…

WALLACE: Do you ever watch Fox News Sunday sir?

CLINTON: I don’t believe you ask them that.

WALLACE: We ask plenty of questions of…

CLINTON: You didn’t ask that did you? Tell the truth.

WALLACE: About the USS Cole?

CLINTON: Tell the truth.

WALLACE: I…with Iraq and Afghanistan there’s plenty of stuff to ask.

CLINTON: Did you ever ask that? You set this meeting up because you were going to get a lot of criticism from your viewers because Rupert Murdoch is going to get a lot of criticism from your viewers for supporting my work on climate change. And you came here under false pretenses and said that you’d spend half the time talking about…

WALLACE: [laughs]

CLINTON: You said you’d spend half the time talking about what we did out there to raise $7 billion dollars plus over three days from 215 different commitments. And you don’t care.

Clinton on his priorities and the Bush administration priorities:

CLINTON: What did I do? I worked hard to try and kill him. I authorized a finding for the CIA to kill him. We contracted with people to kill him. I got closer to killing him than anybody has gotten since. And if I were still president we’d have more than 20,000 troops there trying to kill him. Now I never criticized President Bush and I don’t think this is useful. But you know we do have a government that thinks Afghanistan is 1/7 as important as Iraq. And you ask me about terror and Al Qaeda with that sort of dismissive theme when all you have to do is read Richard Clarke’s book to look at what we did in a comprehensive systematic way to try to protect the country against terror. And you’ve got that little smirk on your face. It looks like you’re so clever…
WALLACE: [Laughs]

CLINTON: I had responsibility for trying to protect this country. I tried and I failed to get Bin Laden. I regret it but I did try. And I did everything I thought I responsibly could. The entire military was against sending special forces into Afghanistan and refueling by helicopter and no one thought we could do it otherwise…We could not get the CIA and the FBI to certify that Al Qaeda was responsible while I was President. Until I left office. And yet I get asked about this all the time and they had three times as much time to get him as I did and no one ever asks them about this. I think that’s strange.

The nerve of ABC for pointing out the miserable failures of the Clinton VS terrorism.
The myth of Bill was shattered when so many of the candidates Bill stumped for lost in 2002 and 2004.
Now when the acutal truth is pointed out, libs go into their usual attack mode.
However the REAL Clinton legacy is safe, and as a public service, her it is

Clinton made Wallace look like an ijit...

but whatever blows your skirt up... lol... :cof:

ABC Fascists Rethink Partisan Attack
Democrat leaders are furious over an upcoming ABC dramatization of the 9/11 tragedy that unfairly portrays President Clinton as too distracted by Monica Lewinsky to pursue Osama Bin Laden. It's clearly a partisan attack, intended to divide Americans at a time they should all be uniting behind Democrats. As President, Bill Clinton was perfectly capable of both defending this nation from terrorists AND ejaculating all over the hired help. That's what true leadership is all about. Madeline Albright and others who worked with The Man from Hope insist that given the opportunity, a court-issued warrant, permission from the International Community, a green-light from the ACLU, and a thumbs-up from the public opinion polls, there's nothing that would have stopped him from going after Osama Bin Laden. They are demanding that ABC scrap the miniseries entirely, for while installing porn filters on library computers will lead us down the path to totalitarianism, censorship to protect Bill Clinton's legacy from right-wing smearmongers is essential for a healthy democracy.

In the spirit of national unity, ABC has agreed to remove any footage that makes Clinton or members of his cabinet look like ineffectual boobs. The new, more historically accurate movie will be five minutes long with 6 hours of commercials. In the drama's only scene, a senile, doddering Ronald Reagan is discouraged from capturing Osama Bin Laden by a domineering Nancy Reagan who, on the advice of her astrologer, instructs him instead to lay flowers on Hitler's grave and then beat up some queers for Jesus.

Democrat leaders concede that while the revised film takes some liberties with the facts, it captures perfectly the essence of the Reagan presidency and should air in its entirety. They furthermore encourage anyone wishing to learn what REALLY went on in the Clinton White House to urge their local libraries remove the porn filters from their computers so they can Read More About It.

You are aware that this:

Today, President Bill Clinton taped an interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace, which is scheduled to be aired Sunday. He was told the interview would focus on his nonpartisan efforts to raise over $7 billion to combat the world’s biggest problems.

is just a far-left blogger taking Clinton's "side"?

Bill Clinton does know how to work the media, impossible he's that naive. He says:

ABC just had a right wing conservative on the Path to 9/11 falsely claim that it was based on the 9/11 Commission report with three things asserted against me that are directly contradicted by the 9/11 Commission report

ABC doesn't have a "right-wing" anything, this is Nixonian paranoia.

Butt he never says what those three things are. Clinton again, on his failure to capture OBL:

But at least I tried. That’s the difference in me and some, including all the right wingers who are attacking me now. They ridiculed me for trying. They had eight months to try and they didn’t…I tried. So I tried and failed.

No, what's he was "ridiculed" for was NOT trying and failing to capture OBL, before the uber-terrorist ran off to Pakistan. Maybe the French are right for once and he's really dead.

Looks like Clinton is really coming undone dealing with the fact that his administration was a total failure. Should anyone actually speak the truth he starts attacking them. He must have tried really hard to capture Osama to turn him down several times.

Clinton identified UBL as a problem. Unfortunately his personal behavior got in the way of his being able to perform his duty as POTUS. If he did what he had ought to do, he most definately would have politically been hit with, "Wag the Dog." It was inevitable, a result of politics, especially his triangulation; his personal behavior; and the coming elections.

None of the above excuses GW, but 8 months is a hell of a lot less than 8 years.

It's too bad that Bush has not seemed to learned any lessons from Somalia.

I just read an AP article that said a video was posted on an al-Qaida-linked website of our two boys being dragged, beheaded, and set on fire in Iraq. That happened months ago and we did nothing.

I'd call the INTERVIEW a tie, their both a couple of bricks shy of a full load.

I'm soooooo tired of meida jerks, oh, and Bill Clinton. I thought he retired?

:gross2:

IDK about a total failure. I don't believe Bush's admin. has been a total failure, and I believe bush is doing much worse than Clinton has ever done.

How did Clinton deal with terrorism? Stern warnings and harsh language.

Pres Bush has a simple solution to terrorism - kill the terrorists

Libs are proving once again they are soft on terrorism. They fight harder to protect the Clinton myth then the US from terrorists. People will remember this in November

I understand that you believe Bill's personal behavior got in the way of his ability to perform his duties. Me? While I think his behavior was unseemly and I certainly wouldn't want to be married to him, I think it was the extremists in Congress who latched on to the issue and who made investigating Clinton their personal crusade who obstructed his ability to perform, if in fact, that was the case. I still think Bill did better with his hands tied behind his back than George has done with a Congress and Court that effectuate his every wish. So there ya go...

You are right, however, that politics was the crux of the problem.

Just typical Clinton hot air. He says a lot of words with a lot of emotion and no meat. He's asked why he didn't go after OBL, he diverts the subject to the supposed self-contradiction of the neocons, how long Bush was in office before he took action, and complains about how unfair it is to ask him the question instead of Bush.

I do have a question about this, though:
We could not get the CIA and the FBI to certify that Al Qaeda was responsible while I was President.

Anyone know anything about the veracity of this statement? And also whether or not the lack of "certification" really inhibited his power to capture OBL?

You would Jilly. You want a smooth talking lib to bow before the UN and gather everyone to a table and discuss the shortcomings of America.
To you, the way to fight terrorists is to file court papers and file lawsuites

In the real world, you capture and kill terrorists and you do not take a poll on how to protect Amercia

I understand that you believe Bill's personal behavior got in the way of his ability to perform his duties. Me? Yeah, and 8 months is still a hell of a lot less time than 8 years...

And yet OBL is still making tapes. That is not a solution, it is plan. A solution would imply that it is working.

Libs do point this out on a dialy basis. However, if the military captured him today, the libs would rant how it was timed for the elections.

Like most terrorists, he is on the run and looking over his shoulder every minute of the day.

He has lost his power and his life. We will get him and then the libs can rally around the turban and make sure he is being treated "properly" and his "rights" are protected.
