I was in Germany at the time and watched the news on German TV. For 24 hours, every TV channel broadcast all events in English. I vividly remember when the terrorists and their hostages boarded helicopters at Furstenfeldbruck airport. Chancellor Willy Brandt was on the phone with PM Golda Meir and he asked her what should he do and she said, "Don't let them escape.'' So Brandt told the German police and they threw grenades into the chopper and killed everyone aboard. Nobody questioned her decision. It was a very sad and tragic time.

What about Munich '72?

September 5, 1972. 5 Arab terrorists broke into the Olympic village
at the 1972 Munich Games and murdered the entire Israeli Olympic delegation.

I was in Germany at the time and watched the news on German TV. For 24 hours, every TV channel broadcast all events in English. I vividly remember when the terrorists and their hostages boarded helicopters at Furstenfeldbruck airport. Chancellor Willy Brandt was on the phone with PM Golda Meir and he asked her what should he do and she said, "Don't let them escape.'' So Brandt told the German police and they threw grenades into the chopper and killed everyone aboard. Nobody questioned her decision. It was a very sad and tragic time.

Well, I was not even born yet, but heard stories about the Mossad chief spitting at the German security/police commander who was responsible for keeping everything in check...
Many things can be said about PM Golda Meir, but one thing for sure she knew how to give her people the sense of confidence, that no words or means would deter her from standing for their interest and protect them.This was at times when the government actually conducted a hunt on the Nazis and in response to terror attacks gave the military green light for revenge operations. I'm all for renewing this, as are many sincere Arabs who remember the times after the Six Day War when life improved, business grew and cooperation was everywhere, while Jews could walk freely in Hebron and Ramallah.

You guys in the US seem to have not lost that sense of basic justice.

Everything to date having failed to establish a lasting peace in the Middle East it appears Golda Meir was right when she said "Peace will come when the Arabs learn to love their own children more than they hate us." And still, time marches on.
