The People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong have been trading influences ever since the establishment of Hong Kong as a British colony a little over 100 years ago. While Hong Kong certainly reflects the broad cultural influences of its giant neighbor, what effect has this tiny territory had on the economic development of the PRC?

Hong Kong is a key element of the world's modern free market and a hub of negotiations, and, incidentally, an intriguing 'liveable city.' Many are referring to it in everyday street talk now as simply "HK."

Negotiations between the East and West hinge more on Hong Kong (China-USA) than on Seoul (Korea-USA).

When you notice a young man in Hong Kong riding a scooter through the streets at night, accentuating the liveable aspects of the modern dynamic street-beat, you might feel better about today's 'consumerism lifestyle' that turns yesterday's bazaar into today's human mall.

I always look out for that offbeat street-talk vigilante, Francois X (drawing below), a peculiar Frenchman trader who rides his Vespa through the night-lit streets of Hong Kong and selling hashish and audio cassettes.
